Microsoft conquers May: Xbox 360 out-earns Wii and PS3 combined in US

Like that annoying bunny from the old school battery adverts, the Xbox 360 just keeps on plugging. According to the latest batch of NPD figures, Microsoft made $209 million from current generation hardware in the US last month - "more than the spend on the other two current generation consoles combined".

Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg adds that Xbox took 45 per cent of market share, marking the 15th consecutive month the console has accounted for over 40 per cent. Six of the month's biggest software sellers are available on Xbox 360.

Pretty stirring stuff, given all the doom-and-gloom talk of late-cycle decline. It's not all roses, though: NPD analyst Anita Frazier says that "all hardware platforms, save the 3DS, saw a decline in unit sales versus last year".

It's possible manufacturers can arrest such slumps by introducing new pricing initiatives and models, like the monthly subscription Xbox and the rumoured Xbox Loop.

Cheers, CVG.
