Zimmerman makes new appeal for bail; judge considers

Circuit Court Judge Kenneth Lester is apparently weighing whether to grant bail to George Zimmerman after Friday's hearing. NBC's Kerry Sanders reports.

By NBC's Jamie Novogrod and msnbc.com's Kari Huus

A bail hearing in Sanford, Fla. for George Zimmerman concluded Friday after a heated exchange in which prosecutors argued for denying bond and the defense called on the judge to reinstate the defendant's?$150,000 bail, which was revoked in early June.

Circuit Court Judge Kenneth Lester was weighing the arguments and will issue his ruling by written order, a public information officer for the Seminole County court said. The spokesman did not offer the timing of that order.

Zimmerman, charged with second-degree murder in the February shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, is seeking release on bail for the second time. His initial bail of $150,000 was revoked and he was rearrested on June 3, after prosecutors argued that Zimmerman, with the aid of his wife's testimony, had misled the court about?their financial picture in the first bail hearing on April 20.

Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty to the?murder charge, and asserted that he acted in self-defense.

Earlier in the three-hour proceedings, ????Zimmerman's father, Robert John Zimmerman, took the stand briefly.

After the elder Zimmerman was sworn in, defense attorney Mark O'Mara played a witness 911 tape that captured the sounds of screaming and a shot being fired during the fatal encounter between Trayvon and Zimmerman.

Under questioning by O'Mara, the elder Zimmerman said he told state investigators that the voice of the man screaming "was absolutely George's."

Assistant State Attorney Bernie de la Rionda then questioned Robert Zimmerman, asking how his son could make those screaming noises if, ?as George Zimmerman told police, Martin was covering his nose and mouth.

Robert Zimmerman responded: "From the look of my son's injuries, Trayvon Martin's hands were not just on his nose and mouth."

The court heard testimony from firefighter Kevin O'Rourke, of the Sanford Fire Department, who was called to the scene after the shooting.?O'Rourke, who said he attended to Zimmerman, answered questions about the severity of the shooter's injuries.

"I observed that he had blood on his face and the back of his head," O'Rourke said.

He said that Zimmerman's nose was "obviously deformed," agreeing with defense attorney Don West that the injury was consistent with a broken nose. But under questioning by prosecutor de la Rionda, O'Rourke said he didn't diagnose Zimmerman with a broken nose.

The court was also shown the last minutes of a video taken by Sanford police on Feb. 27 in which Zimmerman discusses wounds to his nose and head.

Zimmerman appeared at the hearing wearing a grey suit, after?O'Mara had successfully argued that showing up in prison garb and shackles could damage his client's chances of getting a fair trial.

Martin's older brother Jahvaris Martin attended the hearing, along with Trayvon's parents, Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton. The family was escorted -- and sat with -- family attorney Benjamin Crump.

Following the money
At the start of the hearing, the first witness to testify, at the request of Zimmerman's defense attorney Mark O'Mara, was an accounting expert Adam MaGill, who detailed a series of money transfers conducted by the defendant's wife, using money contributed for his legal defense.

MaGill, who was called by the defense, said he was asked by O'Mara to look at records of money transfers from Zimmerman's PayPal account to the official legal defense fund later established by O'Mara.

The judge determined that Zimmerman and his wife Shellie misled the court about their finances his first bail hearing.

Shellie Zimmerman?testified at that April 20 proceeding that she did not know how much money was in a PayPal account set up for contributions to her husband's legal defense.

In recorded telephone conversations from jail prior to that date, Zimmerman and his wife appear to discuss ? in thinly?disguised code ? the amount of money in the account, and he instructs her to make a series of transfers to other accounts, the prosecution charges. (Read original report.)

Special Prosecutor Angela Corey used the recordings to persuade?the judge to revoke the original bond for George Zimmerman.?Shellie Zimmerman was arrested on June 12, charged with perjury and released on $1,000 bond.

She was not present at Friday's bond hearing for her husband.

O?Mara told NBC on Thursday that if Zimmerman is released on bond, he would go back into hiding for his own safety. The shooting death of Martin, an unarmed black teenager, in February has stirred an emotional national debate about race, gun rights and "stand your ground" laws like the one in Florida that use a broad definition of self-defense.

NBC's Lisa Lampkin contributed to this report.

(AP Photo/Virginia Mayo)

(AP) ? After tough all-night bargaining, European leaders appeared to salvage what had seemed to be a summit teetering toward failure by agreeing early Friday to use the continent's bailout fund to funnel money directly to struggling banks, and in the longer term to the idea of a tighter union.

The bank decision at overnight meetings in Brussels was aimed at helping Spain, which sought a ?100 billion rescue to help its troubled banks and wound up facing rising borrowing costs for the government.

European Council President Herman Van Rompuy called it a "breakthrough that banks can be recapitalized directly."

In addition, the leaders agreed that EU countries that were following budget rules could apply for bailouts that would not come with the stringent conditions that have accompanied previous EU bailouts ? a recognition, said Italian Premier Mario Monti, who pushed for the deal, of the work such countries were already doing in reforming their budgets.

Monti said Italy did not intend to apply for a bailout.

Still, Van Rompuy said the bailout agreement was important.

"We are opening the possibilities for countries that are well-behaving to make use of financial stability instruments, the EFSF and ESM, in order to reassure markets and get again some stability around some of the sovereign bonds of our member states," he said, referring to two bailout funds set up by the EU.

That meant, he said, that there would not be any more countries struggling under the stern conditions that have been imposed on previous EU countries that received bailouts ? an apparently sharp change in EU policy.

Van Rompuy said leaders of the 17-nation eurozone also agreed to a joint banking supervisory body. And he said the leaders of the full 27-member European Union agreed to a general long-term plan for a tighter budgetary and political union.

The importance of recapitalizing banks directly became evident when Spain asked for money for its shaky banks. Under current rules the bailout loan had to be made to the government, which would then lend it on to the banks. But having that debt on the government's books spooked investors, who began demanding higher interest rates for lending money to the government.

The result was rates that would have been unsustainable in the long term. Lending the money directly to the banks would avoid putting that debt on the government's books.

The leaders agreed on "the four building blocks" of a tighter European Union ? but said they wouldn't start pinning down details until a report in October. The building blocks were laid out in a sweeping document presented by Van Rompuy and colleagues earlier this week that included sharing debt in the form of jointly issued eurobonds.

Van Rompuy said the report expected in October would be "a specific and time-bound roadmap for the achievement of a genuine economic and monetary union."

"The aim is to make the euro an irreversible project," he said.

He did not say Friday, however, whether the general agreement on the tighter union included a firm commitment on Eurobonds from Germany ? which has firmly opposed sharing debt with more profligate countries such as Greece.

Egypt president's wife: Don't call me first lady

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's new first lady Naglaa Ali Mahmoud and her predecessor Suzanne Mubarak have at least one thing in common: Both have seen their husbands and sons detained in Egyptian prisons.

The similarities appear to end there.

The deposed President Hosni Mubarak's wife was an elegant, sophisticated university graduate with a British mother. She was criticized for being elitist, vain, self-important, overbearing and oblivious to the plight of ordinary Egyptians.

By contrast, Islamist President-elect Mohammed Morsi's wife is a conservative, religious Muslim who wears a veil and did not attend college. Detractors consider her style to be emblematic of Egypt's steady march toward conservative Islam, while supporters proclaim that her modest demeanor and background embody the democratic spirit of the revolution.

Naglaa Ali Mahmoud has reportedly said she would prefer not to live in the Presidential Palace, and the couple has yet to move in. She also doesn't want to be called the first lady.

"I want to be called the president's wife," she told The Associated Press by telephone. "Who said that the president's wife is the first lady anyways?"

Instead, she said she prefers to be called Umm Ahmed, which means mother of Ahmed ? her eldest son. It's a moniker that some secular Egyptian elites might disdain as patriarchal. Her defenders note that unlike the two first ladies before her, she has not taken on her husband's last name in public in a sign of self-assertion that also falls in line with Islamic tradition throughout Egypt.

If she must have a title, she says, she would not mind being called "the first servant" of the people.

Her style so far could not be a more marked change in tone from the Mubaraks, who presided over massive corruption that enriched an elite cadre of businessmen and ruling party leaders while half the country of 85 million people struggled in abject poverty.

Morsi and his sons, like many activists of the Muslim Brotherhood movement he belonged to, were imprisoned during the Mubarak regime's three decades in power. The old regime banned the Brotherhood and persecuted, jailed and tortured its members as political opponents.

But now, as an Egyptian expression goes, the pyramid has been turned on its head.

The differences between the first ladies are symbolic of the sea change in Egyptian politics. Morsi is the country's first freely elected president in modern history, the first civilian and Islamist to hold the office.

And the 84-year-old Mubarak is serving a life sentence in prison for failing to stop the killing of hundreds of protesters during the uprising. His two sons Alaa and Gamal were recently acquitted of corruption on a legal technicality, but remain in jail awaiting a new trial on charges of insider trading.

For the nearly three decades of Mubarak's rule, roads were paved and flowers were planted for Suzanne's arrivals ? sometimes just temporarily while she briefly visited a university or a park ? at the cost of thousands of dollars.

Umm Ahmed sought immediately to draw a clear distinction between herself and her predecessors ? including former first lady Jehan Sadat, who, like Suzanne Mubarak, was also university-educated, impeccably dressed and coiffed and the daughter of a British mother.

But under the glare of her newfound fame, already the 50-year-old, bespectacled Umm Ahmed's style of dress is being picked apart. The way she wears the headscarf has been deemed by elites as the antithesis of elegance. In fact, there is already a war of words on social media over her conservative, modest style, which is shared by the vast majority of women in Egypt's impoverished villages and towns.

Her black abaya, or robe, is another mark of her mores. It is same one worn by many female followers of the Muslim Brotherhood.

She does not wear make-up or paint her nails in line with conservative Islamic tradition.

Some of her detractors are not opposed to her wearing a headscarf, but more with her choice of headscarves ? long scarves in solid colors that drape past her shoulders and are seen as a sort of Muslim Brotherhood uniform.

"I don't have a problem with her hijab (Islamic headscarf). But I do have a problem that it is phosphoric green," blogger Mahmoud Salem, a secular liberal, told the AP. He believes her image sends a message that this is what Muslim girls should dress like and will alienate Christians and Muslims who do not cover their hair.

"At the end of the day, the first lady is diplomatically representing Egypt. We did not choose to make her a public persona. (The Muslim Brotherhood) made her a public persona" who will be scrutinized, he added.

Egyptians will be watching closely to see whether Umm Ahmed chooses to meet foreign dignitaries, attends conferences and other events with or without her husband, and changes her style for formal occasions. Another question is whether she will follow conservative Islamic protocol and refuse to shake hands or otherwise touch the opposite sex. Her husband defied those protocols this week, days after he was named president, when he was pictured shaking hands with women.

She may choose instead to take on a quieter role by getting involved in local charity projects and avoid international travel and high-level diplomacy.

So far, Umm Ahmed has not completely shied away from the spotlight, as wives of rulers do in more conservative Islamic societies such as Saudi Arabia. She has given a handful of interviews to the media, has met with the families of protesters killed in the uprising and made appearances at campaign rallies for her husband.

As is common in the Arab world, Umm Ahmed married her cousin, Morsi, at a young age ? 17.

In an interview with the state-owned Nos al-Donia, or Half the World, a magazine geared toward women readers, she said her ring and dowry were "simple."

"The financial situation wasn't part of my calculations. ... What pulled me to him was a sense that he was a responsible man who will protect me," she said of Morsi. "It is enough that when my parents passed away, they were very pleased with him."

Less than two years after she married Morsi, she joined him in Los Angeles, where he was studying for a doctorate in engineering at the University of Southern California.

Two of their five children ? four boys and girl ? were born in the United States, making them U.S. citizens. She said the two have not returned, though, since they left as children.

While in California she worked as an Arabic-English translator for Muslim Americans, and the young couple became involved in charity projects. It was then that they joined the fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood.

Years later in Egypt, when Morsi was detained for eight months in 2008 for activity on behalf of the banned Brotherhood, she said she felt "inner peace" even though he was "the backbone of the household."

Multiple times, according to her interview with Nos al-Donia, her home was raided and her sons interrogated and detained. During one of those raids, she said she advised her son just before his arrest to use his time in prison to relearn the Quran, Islam's holy book, and memorize it again. She told him to consider it a political detention and something to be proud of.

"This is our life and our sacrifices that we endure and we will continue to give to our country until we feel dignity on this kind land," she was quoted as saying.

In the same interview, she described a regular family life, watching movies together at home and taking vacations to Egypt's beaches.

Fatema Abouzeid, a young Brotherhood activist, said she met her in May for the first time and found her to be modest and social.

"She is not arrogant and even when people would talk nicely about her husband, she would reply simply with 'thank Allah'," Abouzeid said. "I don't want to compare her with Suzanne, but the major difference I could see is her manner with people. She was standing normally among people and speaking normally."

Former Brotherhood lawmaker Azza al-Gharf, who has known Umm Ahmed for the past five years, said the new first lady would sit among the crowds during her husband's campaign rallies, nearly unnoticed and refusing special seating.

Al-Gharf said what makes Umm Ahmed so different from her predecessor, Suzanne, is that "she is one of us" and has suffered the problems of many Egyptians.

"She is a true Egyptian woman. She is standing by her husband with all devotion," al-Gharf said. "As the Muslim Brotherhood, we do not want another first lady for Egypt. We want a wife who stands by her husband, but who knows her limits."

Seth MacFarlane once included a gag on his animated TV comedy "Family Guy" about an "edited for rednecks" version of Carl Sagan's "Cosmos," featuring an animated Sagan dubbed over to say that the earth is "hundreds and hundreds" of years old.?

Jokes aside, his admiration for Sagan runs deep.

The Library of Congress announced Wednesday that, thanks to MacFarlane's generosity, it has acquired the personal papers of the late scientist and astronomer, who spoke to mass audiences about the mysteries of the universe and the origins of life. While MacFarlane never owned Sagan's papers, he covered the undisclosed costs of donating them to the library.

"All I did was write a check, but it's something that was, to me, worth every penny," MacFarlane told The Associated Press by phone from Los Angeles. "He's a man whose life's work should be accessible to everybody."

MacFarlane ? creator of "Family Guy," ''American Dad!" and "The Cleveland Show" ? met Sagan's widow and collaborator, Ann Druyan, at an event a few years ago that brought together Hollywood screenwriters and directors with scientists. They agreed to collaborate on a follow-up to "Cosmos," Sagan's acclaimed 1980 miniseries, with MacFarlane serving as producer. Astrophysicst Neil deGrasse Tyson will host the series, which is scheduled to begin production this fall.

MacFarlane said he watched "Cosmos" as a child and devoured all of Sagan's books.

"He was an enormous and profound influence in my life," MacFarlane said. "He played an essential role ? some would say the only role at the time ? in bridging the gap between the academic community and the general public."

A planetary astronomer and passionate advocate for science, Sagan contributed to a variety of NASA projects and conducted research on the possibilities of extraterrestrial life. He also studied climate change and the "nuclear winter" that could result from a nuclear war. He died in 1996 at age 62.

The papers ? contained in more than 800 filing-cabinet drawers ? include correspondence with other scientists, drafts of Sagan's academic articles and screenplay drafts for the movie "Contact," which was based on Sagan's novel. Also part of the collection: his grade-school report cards and a drawing he made as a child about the future of space exploration.

Druyan said Sagan would have been thrilled to see his life's work made available to the public.

"He was a citizen scientist," Druyan said by phone from her Ithaca, N.Y., home. "He really believed that science belonged to everyone, all of us. He was a 'small-d' democrat in the truest sense of the word."

The donation is part of a busy week for MacFarlane, whose first live-action film, "Ted," hits theaters Friday. While he's known more for crude humor than his interest in science, he hopes to push for a renewed commitment to space exploration. Although he's a liberal Democrat, he was impressed by Newt Gingrich's recent comments about establishing a colony on the moon.

"In the late '60s, they just assumed that would be a given, that things would continue to progress and that the space program would continue to evolve, and it was a no-brainer that we would have a presence on the moon by 2000," MacFarlane said. "We're so far away from that, and it should be embarrassing."

Ariz. immigrants group not surprised by ruling

An Arizona immigrant rights group says it is not surprised by the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling on the state's immigration law.

Puente Arizona director Carlos Garcia says the organization expected the high court to uphold part of the law that requires police to check the status of someone suspected to be in the U.S. illegally.

He says Puente will begin reaching out to law enforcement about how they will enforce the law

The court did strike down several key provisions of the law.

Garcia says President Barack Obama can put an end to this by having Immigration and Customs Enforcement cease working with Arizona law enforcement.

Demi Lovato Gets Personal With 'Rowdy' New Jersey Crowd

'X Factor' judge talks breakups and goes 'old school' on the latest stop of her summer tour.
By Jocelyn Vena

Demi Lovato performs at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ on Friday
Photo:

HOLMDEL, NEW JERSEY — Not even rain showers could scare away the Lovatics who crowded the PNC Bank Arts Center to catch the latest stop on Demi Lovato's summer tour Friday night. The star, who's fitting in the trek between her judging duties on the "X Factor," brought out some of New Jersey's most devoted Demi fans.

The star swaggered out to a killer guitar riff before busting out the night's first song, "All Night Long." She shimmied all night in red shorts, a black-and-white blazer and a sheer top, never once stumbling in her sky-high platforms.

She displayed her rock-star bravado when she teased and flirted with her band during tracks that were hardly audible over all the screams.

"Thank you so much for coming," she told the crowd, "You guys are amazing. Let me just tell you guys, I love being in Jersey. It is one of my favorite places. You guys are the rowdiest fans." Several tracks in, Demi displayed her musicianship by strapping on an acoustic guitar for "Catch Me," only to switch over to a yellow electric one mid-song, proving that a '70s rock goddess lurks inside the 19-year-old. Soon though, it was time to slow it down and she showed off her R&B princess side for the Unbroken ballad, "My Love Is a Star," her vocal pyrotechnics mirrored by the lightning and thunder taking place just feet away from where the singer was performing.

"This next song is a pretty personal song for me," she told the room. "How many of you guys have been through a breakup? As you all know I've been through a few. I've been there and I made it through. I love you and I'm always there for you."

She then launched into an emotional version of her track, "Fix a Heart." The intense moment, in which Lovato looked as though she was struggling to hold back her emotions, was met with cheers. She followed it with her now famous cover of Lil Wayne's "How To Love."But, things didn't stay slow for long. "Who's That Boy" picked up the pace followed by "You're My Only Shorty," "Here We Go Again," and "La La Land."

And then came the perfect time for her big (albeit fleeting) plug of the night when she reminded room, "Recently I've been working on a show 'X Factor' [and I get to sit] next to Britney Spears ... I'm gonna slow it down a little bit. Basically I just want to see you guys," she added, requesting that the room hold up a cell phone or glow-stick or lighter if "you're old school." The firefly effect only made the impact of her slow jam, "Lightweight," more grand.

Next she sat at the piano and said, "Before my concerts I get to do a meet-and-greet with some of my fans, and some are brave enough to share some of their stories," however as she got personal a guitar fell and she joked, "Well there goes that moment. ... You don't realize I got through my issues and my problems [because of you guys]." That was the perfect set-up for her defining power ballad, "Skyscraper."

Then, in an interesting twist, she went into the cover of Chris Brown's "Turn Up the Music." And to wrap up the first act of the show she did her own tracks "Together" and her rock-tinged "Remember December."

She came back out for her encore to deafening screams where she kept the energy turned up to a big 10 thanks to her disco anthem "Unbroken" and her current single, "Give Your Heart a Break."

Lovato will be on the road through September 1, with her special guests Hot Chelle Rae. The tour wraps up just in time for the premiere of "X Factor" September 12.

Building a team in your painting business | The Blogging Painters

Since 2003, we?ve worked with over 120 different painting contractors, helping them to successfully grow their business. In that?experience, we?ve found a handful of things that are universal. One is the?responsibility?that owners feel for the work of their company. Consequently, when business owners try to grow their team, specifically Crew Leaders, we hear quite often, ?I?struggle?to find good people. I can?t just hand over my jobs to anybody!?

There?s a lot of truth in that statement. ?But there is a little bit of head trash as well. ?No, there may not be people in your company who have the talent, skills, and knowledge to take on a Crew Leader?s role ? right now. ? But Crew Leaders, along with a High Performance Team in general, can be built. ?It takes time, commitment, mistakes, and small steps.

Below are six practical steps we have found to be highly successful. Use the items below to create a plan for your team. Then stick to it for at least six months. ? After six months, our experience tells us you will have come a long way and you will want to keep going.

  1. Understand that you can?t hire yourself.?You are unique; and we are all different. In the book, Now, Discover Your Strengths, Marcus Buckingham (p53-56) descibes?eloquently?how we have difficulty accepting this. Our talents come so easy to us, he says, that we often think everyone sees the world as we do- and shares our talents. They don?t.
  2. Tell your people what?s in your head.?Communicate, communicate, communicate. Then tell them again. As the owner, you are constantly thinking about what?s important to your business?s success. Meet regularly (weekly) with your key people to make sure they know what you think is important. Tell them where the company is headed and how their position is important to getting there.
  3. Listen to what your people have to say. If you are going to share with them what you think is important, be ready to take some feedback. It?s not about just you anymore, it?s about the team. ?Your people may be more in-tune with your business than you think. Listen to what they have to say. ?Trust them to give you honest and meaningful intel.?Implement their ideas.
  4. Create clear goals and celebrate!?Leaders define winning and then go after it. Big goals, little goals, weekly goals, daily goals. Goals make work meaningful. How do you know when to celebrate success without a clear end point? Without goals, your company is either flailing in the wind or continuously reaching for a moving target. Make sure your people know where the short-term finish lines are ? and celebrate when you get there! (it makes moving on the next goal a lot more meaningful.)
  5. Commit to Training and Documenting. For every one free-throw in a game, how many free-throws do you think Michael Jordan took in practice? ?Probably a lot; and he never stopped. ?The best at anything are always training ? big things and little things. ?Give your people the same opportunity. ?Create a training culture by turning mistakes into learning?opportunities. Start documenting how you do things. Pick one topic per month,?for example, ?First Day of a Job.? ?Write down what the steps are, train your leaders, and revise as?necessary?with your?people?s?input.
  6. Make sure the job fits the talent. Not everyone is a star Crew Leader. And star Crew Leaders aren?t always the best painters.?If an employee is not working out, review with them the systems and position they are in to make sure there is a fit. It might be time to move on, making room for others to move up. ?On the other side of the coin, who among your team is hiding in the shadows? ?The number one reason people don?t volunteer is they were not asked. Who on your team might be waiting for you to ask?

Are all the decisions in your company going thru you, like sand thru the center of an hourglass? ?Getting out of the ?Hourglass? means bringing others into the inner circle? sharing the load. ?This can be a scary notion. But by including others in key activities and decisions you will be opening up?possibilities for?the future. Give your people the regular opportunity to stretch their wings, even if its just a little bit at a time. ?The result is to sharpen the talent, skills, and knowledge of your people, and slowly hand over more and more?responsibility.

Have a great week!

50-gigapixel camera is straight out of science fiction

22 hrs.

While photographers marvel at the 20 or 30 megapixels captured by the latest cameras, researchers at Duke laugh quietly and return to their lab to continue work on a system that could capture 50 gigapixels at the touch of a button.

For comparison, if your average point-and-shoot picture was the size of a word on this page, a 50-gigapixel shot would be around the size of your entire screen.

Gigapixels aren't new in and of themselves, of course: Enormous photos of the Milky Way or Obama's?inauguration are both effective demonstrations of the power of huge images. But generally these giant pictures are created by one camera that takes hundreds (or thousands) of shots, which are then?fitted together after the fact. Not a problem if you're taking pictures of stars, but no good?if you wanted to capture a flock of birds taking off.

The team at Duke, led by David Brady at Duke's Pratt School of Engineering, decided to take things a different direction: instead of taking lots of pictures in sequence with one camera, why not take lots of pictures at once with a bunch of cameras?

The result is the AWARE-2 camera system, a machine that looks like something out of science fiction. It bristles with wires and ports, and houses?a lens array that could be the eye of an enormous robotic insect.

The system actually shares many characteristics with insects' compound eyes: A single image enters through a central lens, but is then refracted outward in 98 different directions to 98 different image sensors, each of which receives a different piece of the picture. The pieces are then assembled by a central processor.

Images produced by the system are enormous. 50 gigapixels is the maximum theoretical size, but even a fraction of that?that is far larger than any picture most people have ever taken. Look at the shot below; on this enormous landscape, the tiny white dots on the sky are in fact birds, captured in enough detail that you can zoom in and check out the details of their wings. (here's a larger version)

That's with a prototype device using only half the microcameras and the first generation of lenses designed for the system.?Brady explains that right now, the size and quality of images is limited by the quality of the main objective lens, but they have already built a superior lens for 10-gigapixel images.

50 gigapixels is the upper limit because it is the precision?limit of lens-manufacturing technology, and also because beyond that you start running into the resolution limit of the atmosphere, i.e. what can be discerned through all those pesky air molecules between the camera and the subject. So it's no surprise that they're considering imaging at that size for astronomical rather than terrestrial photography.

The applications of enormous images captured more or less instantly are easy to imagine, both in everyday life, academic research, and for the military, which is funding the project through DARPA.

The paper describing AWARE-2 was published in the journal Nature, and the authors have put together a separate?site with more information and lots of?pictures for the curious.

All-carbon solar cell draws power from near-infrared light, our energy future is literally that much brighter

Fully carbon solar cell can power up from infrared light, our future is literally that much brighter

What's this orange-like patch, you ask? It's a layer of carbon nanotubes on silicon, and it might just be instrumental to getting a lot more power out of solar cells than we're used to. Current solar power largely ignores near-infrared light and wastes about 40 percent of the potential energy it could harness. A mix of carbon nanotubes and buckyballs developed by MIT, however, can catch that near-infrared light without degrading like earlier composites. The all-carbon formula doesn't need to be thickly spread to do its work, and it simply lets visible light through -- it could layer on top of a traditional solar cell to catch many more of the sun's rays. Most of the challenge, as we often see for solar cells, is just a matter of improving the energy conversion rate. Provided the researchers can keep refining the project, we could be looking at a big leap in solar power efficiency with very little extra footprint, something we'd very much like to see on the roof of a hybrid sedan.
