Unemployment benefit applications jumped last week, largely because companies let go of thousands of temporary employees after the holiday season. Weekly applications rose by 24,000 to 399,000, the highest level in six weeks.

Georgia: Up 7,707, due to layoffs in services, manufacturing, trade and construction
North Carolina: Up 6,849, due to layoffs in the construction, textile, service, apparel and furniture industries
States with the biggest drops:
California: Down 23,969, due to fewer layoffs in the construction, service and manufacturing industries
Illinois: Down 4,696, no reason given
Texas: Down 2,385, no reason given
Nevada: Down 1,590, due to fewer layoffs over the holiday
Kansas: Down 1,341, no reason given
