Down - Workers Compensation Insurance . com

Kneebow here,
I know exactly what you are feeling. I hope you get help soon for it. I wasn't able to get help right away.

I paid for my first psych appt. myself. The psychiatrist sent a written referral to have the depression added on to my w/c claim. W/C then sent me to an IME who wrote his findings, and then w/c allowed the depression.

I still am messed up, physically, emotionally, financially, and mentally. So I guess I just gotta keep seeing the psych, who reminds me how my new life of disability, is one I'll just have to learn how to accept.

Pain management helps some with the pain meds and the Psychiatrist gives me antidepressant meds. I just am not sure if this is how my life is going to be forever or if it will get better.

A Look at Facts and Myths of Health and Fitness ? Hot Article Depot

No matter if you are old hand or new at health and fitness education the overall amount of information can seem a bit staggering. This is a situation that can get worse when the line between truth and lie is very thin and overwhelming. One of the first things you?ll notice is that fitness books are most usually written by those who have personal experience or knowledge of the subject. There are many approaches to working out and much depends on what you will be doing. No doubt you will find some information that seems contradictory to other information you?ve found even though they may both be somewhat truthful. Be extra careful that you are analyzing everything.

You can find several yoga and back pain products online. According to all the marketing, yoga can help relieve back pain. This is only true for some cases, making this statement misleading and dangerous. If your back pain is caused by muscle issues, then doing yoga can certainly help. Yoga can help you stretch and strengthen the muscles in your back. Once you can do that, then your back pain will get better. Yoga won?t help, however, if your back pain is due to bone problems like an issue with a spinal disc. Doing yoga with this kind of problem can cause serious complications.

Sweat is another subject in this series. Working out is synonymous with sweat typically speaking. Most also believe the flip side of that too. In fact sweat is simply your body?s air conditioner. There is in fact no correlation between sweat and physical exertion.

You do not have to sweat to burn calories. Even just a walk can help you accomplish that.

Mental horsepower is only one benefit of fitness exercises. A higher level of performance and brain power is what we are talking about.

It?s important for you to take the time to research everything in order to be able to clearly discern fact from fiction. In fact, it is in your very best interest to do so. Before you go out half cocked and exert the energy and time necessary for a change in lifestyle you need to know that you are doing it right. When you have a properly calculated exercise routine based solely on your research you will reap the benefits.

Earth's iron core is surprisingly weak

May 20, 2013 ? Researchers have used a diamond anvil cell to squeeze iron at pressures as high as 3 million times that felt at sea level to recreate conditions at the center of Earth. The findings could refine theories of how the planet and its core evolved.

Through laboratory experiments, postdoctoral researcher Arianna Gleason, left, and Wendy Mao, an assistant professor of geological and environmental sciences and of photon science, determined that the iron in Earth's inner core is about 40 percent as strong as previously believed.

The massive ball of iron sitting at the center of Earth is not quite as "rock-solid" as has been thought, say two Stanford mineral physicists. By conducting experiments that simulate the immense pressures deep in the planet's interior, the researchers determined that iron in Earth's inner core is only about 40 percent as strong as previous studies estimated.

This is the first time scientists have been able to experimentally measure the effect of such intense pressure -- as high as 3 million times the pressure Earth's atmosphere exerts at sea level -- in a laboratory. A paper presenting the results of their study is available online in Nature Geoscience.

"The strength of iron under these extreme pressures is startlingly weak," said Arianna Gleason, a postdoctoral researcher in the department of Geological and Environmental Sciences, and lead author of the paper. Wendy Mao, an assistant professor in the department, is the co-author.

"This strength measurement can help us understand how the core deforms over long time scales, which influences how we think about Earth's evolution and planetary evolution in general," Gleason said.

Until now, almost all of what is known about Earth's inner core came from studies tracking seismic waves as they travel from the surface of the planet through the interior. Those studies have shown that the travel time through the inner core isn't the same in every direction, indicating that the inner core itself is not uniform. Over time and subjected to great pressure, the core has developed a sort of fabric as grains of iron elongate and align lengthwise in parallel formations.

The ease and speed with which iron grains in the inner core can deform and align would have influenced the evolution of the early Earth and development of the geomagnetic field. The field is generated by the circulation of liquid iron in the outer core around the solid inner core and shields Earth from the full intensity of solar radiation. Without the geomagnetic field, life -- at least as we know it -- would not be possible on Earth.

"The development of the inner core would certainly have some effect on the geomagnetic field, but just what effect and the magnitude of the effect, we can't say," said Mao. "That is very speculative."

Gleason and Mao conducted their experiments using a diamond anvil cell -- a device that can exert immense pressure on tiny samples clenched between two diamonds. They subjected minute amounts of pure iron to pressures between 200 and 300 gigapascals (equivalent to the pressure of 2 million to 3 million Earth atmospheres). Previous experimental studies were conducted in the range of only 10 gigapascals.

"We really pushed the limit here in terms of experimental conditions," Gleason said. "Pioneering advancements in pressure-generation techniques and improvements in detector sensitivity, for example, used at large X-ray synchrotron facilities, such as Argonne National Lab, have allowed us to make these new measurements."

In addition to intense pressures, the inner core also has extreme temperatures. The boundary between the inner and outer core has temperatures comparable to the surface of the sun. Simultaneously simulating both the pressure and temperature at the inner core isn't yet possible in the laboratory, though Gleason and Mao are working on that for future studies. (For this study, Gleason mathematically extrapolated from their pressure data to factor in the effect of temperature.)

Gleason and Mao expect their findings will help other researchers set more realistic variables for conducting their own experiments.

"People modeling the inner core haven't had many experimental constraints, because it's so difficult to make measurements under those conditions," Mao said. "There really weren't constraints on how strong the core was, so this is really a fundamental new constraint."

Hey, It's OK If You're Breaking Up Before College - Huffington Post

Breaking up is hard to do -- and even with the excitement of college in the air, parting ways with your high school sweetheart because you're both heading your separate ways doesn't make it any easier. When it comes time to leave your high school life behind and start a new chapter of your life, choosing whether to stay with your boyfriend or girlfriend can be one of the biggest decisions you make.

Of course, choosing whether to stay with someone is a complicated decision that involves a number of factors, and at the end of the day, only you can know what's right for your relationship. But if you do decide to call it quits during your senior year or the summer before college, there are a lot of reasons that you may benefit from making that decision -- even if it doesn't feel like it right now. Scroll through the list below for a little comfort if you're dealing with some pre-college heartbreak.

1. Staying Together Can Make The Transition More Difficult.

Holding onto you high school BF or GF may make the transition to college life a little easier at first (you'll have someone to call when you're feeling lonely or overwhelmed), but ultimately, it can be a crutch that prevents you from getting out there and meeting new people. And turning a relationship into a long-distance affair can also create a lot of work, tension and potentially frustration. Before you make that commitment, you'll have to ask yourself some important questions: Do you trust your siggo? Do you think you'll be tempted when you meet other people that you're attracted to? Can you put in the time commitment to Skype often enough to keep the relationship alive? Many couples who try to stay together through their first year of college find that their relationship is unable to withstand the pressure.

Although some relationships do survive the college transition and go on to thrive throughout the university years and beyond, it can be incredibly difficult to maintain a relationship when life takes the two of you in different directions. Long-distance relationships can get ugly -- fast -- and you may find yourself growing apart, and wishing that you had the freedom to see other people.

?A LDR is also 98 percent about trust. If there's no trust, on either, or both ends, you're setting yourself up for many ugly phone conversations,? a Syracuse University freshman, who broke up with her boyfriend after a little over a semester, told Her Campus.

2. You Can End Your Relationship On A High Note.

One benefit of breaking things off before you leave for college -- if you and you siggo decide that's what you want to do -- is that you can try to end things on a positive, amicable note. Making a mutual decision to part ways but stay friends is easier to do when life circumstances -- rather than anger, jealousy or resentment -- are the cause of breakup. Unless you really think your relationship is strong enough to survive and you're willing to put in the time and effort to make it work, it could save the two of you a lot of heartache to part ways pre-college and try to maintain a friendship.

3. Moving On May Be Easier Than You Think.

If you're preparing for a breakup or just went through one, the summer before you leave for college will be a tough one. But once you get to college, don't expect to be filled with regrets and pining over your ex for too long. With all the distractions of freshman life -- new roommates, friends, classes, parties and crushes -- you likely won't continue missing them for too long. It may turn out that both of you find that you're ready to change and grow on your own. One student told USA Today College that once she and her boyfriend got to college and allowed themselves to have new experiences, they realized that they weren't ready for a long-term commitment.

?We weren?t mature enough and hadn?t had enough life experiences to have the kind of relationship we were trying to foster,? St. Mary?s College of Maryland student Kat Eisenberg told USA Today College of her high school-turned-college relationship. ?I think we both met new people and really discovered who we were and that we weren?t really happy. College is full of the ?new? and sometimes that makes a person different.?

4. Being Single Is Awesome -- Especially In College.

When you're first getting out of a serious relationship and experiencing being on your own again, being single can seem like the most terrible fate that could be befall you. But in college, the freedom that comes with being on your own is maybe the best thing that you could hope for. During those four years, there are opportunities around ever corner, and you're constantly being exposed to new people, experiences and ideas. And from all these experiences, you'll be going through a lot of personal growth. If you find someone to grow with you, great. But don't accept anything short of that -- you have too many other awesome things to focus on.

5. College Is Time To Focus On YOU.

You've probably been told a thousand times already that college is a time to learn and explore and discover who you are -- and it's 100 percent true. Again, college should be a time that you focus on developing your own intellectual interests, passions, and new friendships and relationships, rather than focusing on an old relationship that maybe should have stayed in the past. It's going to be tough at first, yes, but once you get adjusted, you'll be happy to be on your own, open to all the amazing possibilities that the next four years will present to you.

Tell us: How did you get through your pre-college breakup? Share your thoughts and stories in the comments below, or tweet @HuffPostTeen.

Google's Field Trip app granting free admission to 13 museums

While Google's Field Trip app may find attractions off the beaten path, it's been up to users to foot the bill for their excursions. Now, however, the Niantic Labs-made application is handing out freebies for an unspecified limited time, allowing those who wield it to waltz into 13 museums for free. Folks near the establishments will receive Free Entry cards in the "nearby" tab, which will let them pass turnstiles without forking over a dime. Although Field Trip has been beefed up with points of interest in over 80 countries, the participating institutions -- which range from The Field Museum to the Walt Disney Family Museum -- are all located in six US cities. Head past the break for the full list.

Google Hangouts Has a Fun New Easter Egg

So, Google's new Hangouts app keeps all of your chats in sync across all of your devices. Cool, right? But what if you're in a video call on your phone, and then open the same video call on your computer. Boop! Suddenly there's two of you, as I just discovered when chatting with my friend Bay.

You can now show two angles of yourself at the same time. Turn your head from one to the quickly for instant comedy. But why stop there? I pulled out my tablet, and yep, that worked, too. In the image above you can see there's three of me and two of him.

This may not have been an intentional Easter egg, but it's fun nonetheless. There might actually be a modicum of utility, even. You could continue to show your face, while you use the camera on your phone to show some project that you're working on. Or maybe it's so you can switch from one device to the other without having to hang up. Really, though, you're just going to use it to weird people out, and that's just fine. But watch out for audio feedback. It can be harsh.

Hoarding disorder gets spotlight in DSM-5

By Mike Krumboltz

A room filled with itemsA room filled with items

Regular viewers of reality shows about hoarding are used to being stunned by someone's clutter. But behind the sensationalistic stories of rooms buried in trash, kitchens filled with rotting food, and yards overrun by goats are people suffering from a serious mental illness ?hoarding?that for many years was misdiagnosed.

The upcoming fifth version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) aims to change that. The highly influential DSM-5 will classify hoarding as a distinct disorder within the chapter about obsessive-compulsive and related disorders. Before the DSM-5, hoarding could be misdiagnosed as a form of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The classification change isn?t just symbolic. The American Psychiatric Association believes it will have a real effect in terms of the diagnosis and treatment of people who have a persistent difficulty ridding themselves of possessions, regardless of their value.

The history

"The history of [misdiagnosing]," said Dr. Jeff Szymanski of the International OCD Foundation in a phone interview with Yahoo News, "is that hoarding possessions, keeping lots of possessions was considered a compulsive behavior early on, so it was put under the rubric of obsessive compulsive disorder. So if you were asking questions about OCD, you would say, 'Do you compulsively hoard lots of objects?' But that was really the only question you ended up asking. It's a key question, but it's really the only question you're asking.

"As people were being treated for OCD and they were working with this subgroup that had hoarding as their OCD symptom, they [mental health providers] started to recognize that, 'Wait a minute, these actually don't seem like they're the same group.'"

Over the past 20 years, researchers working on this have found that OCD and hoarding are quite different. ?There are brain imaging scans that compare people with OCD to people that have hoarding disorder,? said Dr. Szymanski. "And even in brain scans, they're showing some differences."

Dr. Sanjaya Saxena, Director of the University of California San Diego's Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders Program and unofficial advisor in the creation of the DSM-5, said in a phone interview with Yahoo News, "Until recently, the general public and certainly the medical community and maybe even the majority of the mental health community did not understand that this was a neuropsychiatric disorder that was treatable, that was describable, that was consistent. And it wasn't a part of something else, and it was a condition that needed clinical attention."

The change

What will a change in DSM-5 mean for people who suffer from hoarding? Does a reclassification mean that much? Dr. Saxena believes it does. Hoarding, he said, "will be listed, clinicians will have some awareness of it, and people will start screening for it. And patients will realize it?s a problem that they can get treated."

Boxes, clothes, and bins take over rooms and hallwaysBoxes, clothes, and bins take over rooms and hallways

Dr. Saxena also hopes that authorities will start to recognize compulsive hoarding as a psychiatric disorder with the new DSM-5. "The reality shows have raised awareness, but they tend to sensationalize the patients, and they rarely talk about treatment.?

The DSM-5?s reclassification reflects a shift in how mental health professionals think about hoarding. For many years, people who suffered from hoarding were believed to have a social problem or were simply lazy, according to Dr. Saxena. People would be evicted from their homes but were rarely referred for treatment, because nobody recognized hoarding as a disorder.

"The big change," Dr. Saxena said, "will be an official recognition of hoarding as an important neuropsychic disorder that will increase screening, increase detection and diagnosis, and refer patients in for treatment."

In other words, hoarding's new classification in DSM-5 means doctors and mental health professionals are going to be asking different questions. "It can become kind of a big deal," Dr. Szymanski said. "The questions we ask determine the diagnosis. The diagnosis determines the treatment."

The implications

There are other implications in hoarding's reclassification, too. Dr. Saxena hopes it results in more people seeking treatment and receiving a proper diagnosis. "It will also drive the [mental health] field to educate itself and train all the incoming trainees and practicing clinicians of all ages," Dr. Saxena said. "It's already inspiring pharmaceutical companies to think about doing trials specifically for hoarding disorder. They never have before."

Dr. Szymanski said the new questions that determine diagnosis will help mental health professionals develop a better treatment plan. "There are many people with hoarding disorder that if we asked just very straightforward OCD questions, we might not even pick up on hoarding. They might have OCD and we might be treating the OCD but we never really ask the right questions about the hoarding disorder so it never gets treated."

The new classification will also mean a big change in the way hoarding is studied. "Researchers had been studying hoarding disorder for 20 years, but it was a little all over the place. This clarifies the questions and allows us to look more directly at developing better treatments for this population because we're deciding they're a different group," said Dr. Szymanski.

Other benefits

A new classification also brings with it new recognition for those who suffer from hoarding problems. "They aren't pack rats. This is a debilitating disorder," said Dr. Szymanski, "that is inhibiting people from living anywhere close to a full life. So this brings a certain kind of weight to it in a way that I think was not there before."

Everyone's insurance differs, of course, but hoarding's reclassification could mean those with mental health insurance who seek treatment may be better reimbursed.

"If the therapist did not ask the right questions and you don't end up with the diagnosis, then your insurance doesn't pay for it. And now, if you are diagnosed with hoarding disorder, your insurance will cover it if your insurance does cover mental health treatment," said Dr. Szymanski. ?With more detailed questions you can follow up [on], people are more likely to get more accurate diagnosis and treatment. Not only will insurance cover, but you're also more likely to get insurance for treatment that helps.?

Ergot is the name given to the spore, the sclerotium, of the parasitic filamentous fungus Claviceps purpurea, which attacks various cereal grains and wild grasses, especially rye. The sclerotium is a black-violet, slightly curved, conical body, a few millimeters to up to six centimeters in length that can develop in place of a pollen grain. The name ergot (Mutterkorn in German) derives from its earlier use as an abortifacient and a midwife?s aid, since the components trigger labor. The ergot of rye, Secale cornutum, is primarily used medically. Depending upon the habitat, host grass, and climate, the fungus contains different ergot alkaloids, for the most part lysergic acid derivatives. It was long used medicinally in many areas of the northern hemisphere.

Ergot first figured in the historical record during the early Middle Ages when it caused the mass poisoning of thousands. The poisoning was caused by consuming bread that, in extreme cases, contained up to twenty percent ergot. Most affected were the poorer classes who ate rye bread in quantity, whereas the wealthier had more wheat at their tables. Epidemics of ergot poisoning occurred in different regions of Europe and North America. St. Anthony was the patron of the sick and the Antonines the order which cared for the afflicted. Because of the terrible effects of ergot poisoning, known as St. Anthony?s Fire or Ergotism, it was deemed to be divine punishment until the true cause was discovered in the 17th century. This knowledge, along with improved planting methods, led to the decline of such epidemics.

The healing effect of ergot was discovered quite early. The first written record of its medical use is found in Herbal, published in 1582 by Frankfurt?s city physician, Adam Lonitzer. He recommends it for labor pains and mentions that ergot extracts have long been used by midwives to promote contraction of the uterus and to speed up birth. In 1907, the English chemists George Barker and Howard Carr isolated an ergot alkaloid mixture that affected the uterus. Because of its toxic side effects, it was named ergotoxine and was never used medically. After 1932, the English gynecologist Chassar Moir used aqueous ergot extracts which strongly affected the uterus.

Albert Hofmann?s superior, Arthur Stoll, began investigating ergot in 1917 and by the following year had succeeded in isolating pure alkaloids of ergotamine. The compound was brought to market in 1921 as Gynergen?. After that, Stoll ended his research in this area.

In 1935, Hofmann was looking for a new project and suggested to Stoll that he resume investigation of ergot alkaloids. Based on what was known about them so far, Hofmann believed things looked promising. His objective was to continue Stoll?s work and develop new medicines out of ergot. Stoll approved, but warned about the difficulty of working with these unstable substances. The required ergot was grown by farmers in the Emmental region as a secondary income and shipped to Sandoz in Basel in one hundred kilogram barrels. There, it would be milled, extracted with benzene, and concentrated. The components would be fractionated6 and delivered to the experimental laboratory to be tested for purity before further processing. Safety measures in laboratories of the thirties did not compare to present day standards. The workers had no effective protection against highly poisonous chemicals and solvents. Consequently, there were frequent accidents and health hazards, especially with toxic and highly volatile solvents that often led to fainting.

Colorado sheriffs sue to block new gun-control laws

By Keith Coffman

DENVER (Reuters) - A group of Colorado county sheriffs, angry about two new state gun control laws passed in the wake of last year's mass shootings in Connecticut and Colorado, filed a federal lawsuit on Friday seeking to block the laws from going into effect.

The two laws, passed by the state's Democratic-controlled legislature with scant Republican support, ban ammunition magazines that hold more than 15 rounds and require background checks for all private gun sales and transfers.

All but 10 of the state's 64 county sheriffs signed on to the suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Denver. In their complaint, the sheriffs allege the new laws, which go into effect July 1, severely restrict citizens' constitutional right to own and bear arms.

The sheriffs, who in Colorado are elected, also complained that they were operating under tight budgets and did not have the money or manpower to enforce the new laws.

"They (the sheriffs) cannot expend these resources to conduct investigations that would be necessary to monitor compliance," the lawsuit said.

The bills were introduced in response to a shooting spree that killed 12 people at a suburban Denver movie theater last July and the slaying of 20 children and six adults at an elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, in December.

Connecticut and New York also have passed stricter gun laws in the wake of the shootings. The National Rifle Association, the powerful U.S. gun lobby, has announced plans to challenge the new gun control laws in all three states.

REASONABLE SAFETY MEASURES

Democratic state Senator Mary Hodge, who sponsored the magazine-limit bill, blasted the sheriffs and said the restrictions were reasonable public-safety measures.

"We can't just sit by and do nothing while first-graders and moviegoers are being mowed down in one fell swoop with weapons equipped with large-capacity magazines," Hodge said in a statement.

Joining the sheriffs in the lawsuit are a number of gun-rights organizations and a disabled gun owners group, who say that magazine limits would restrict their ability to defend themselves in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which bars discrimination against the disabled.

"Disabilities make it difficult to quickly change magazines under the stress of a home invasion," the lawsuit said.

Governor John Hickenlooper, a Democrat who signed the bills into law, is named as the defendant in the lawsuit. His office had no immediate comment.

Colorado Attorney General John Suthers, a Republican, said in a statement that his role "will be to get court rulings on the legality of various aspects of the legislation as expeditiously as possible."

"Colorado citizens, and law-abiding gun owners in particular, deserve such clarification," said Suthers, who did not publicly oppose the two bills when they were debated in the legislature.

Separately, a Colorado pro-gun group, the Basic Freedom Defense Fund, said it was circulating a petition to recall the president of the state Senate, Democrat John Morse, because of his support for gun control measures.

Morse, a former police officer, said he would likely face a recall election later this year as a result.

"If they are successful in removing the Senate president in Colorado, it will have a chilling effect on anyone who takes them on but if they fail they will be exposed for the paper tiger they should be," he said.

(AP) ? The European auto industry may be showing the first signs of a slowdown in its sales free-fall, according to data from the European automaker's association.

New car registrations in April were up 1.7 percent on the same time last year, the ACEA's latest figures show. Although the April rise has more to do with the two extra work days last month due to an early Easter, sales figures for the year so far gave some cause for hope.

Last month, the ACEA showed registrations for the first three months of 2013 were down 10 percent on the year before. Latest figures show that sales for the first four months of the year were 7.1 percent less than in 2012.

"Is this the 'slowdown-in-the-collapse' that the industry is awaiting for? Let's hope so," said Carlos Da Silva of consultancy IHS Automotive.

The auto industry has been victim of the region's deepening recession and rising unemployment, and Europe's carmakers are looking to see when the bottom will hit.

Many have had to announce factory closures or put off new car launches in bids for survival.

The fortunes of the car industry have a big impact on the rest of Europe. According to the ACEA, the auto industry directly employs 2.3 million people, mainly highly skilled workers, and supports about another 10 million jobs among the carmakers' suppliers.

The declining car market in Europe has been weighing on global carmakers' bottom lines. Last year, four of the biggest automakers based in Europe ? Ford, PSA Peugeot, Fiat and General Motors ? together posted operating losses of 5 billion euros ($7 billion) for the region.

In April, 1.038 million new cars were registered in the European Union, up from the historic low for April of 1.021 million reached in 2012, the ACEA said.

Sales rebounded in Germany, posting a 3.8 percent gain in April compared with the previous year. Sales also were up in Spain, helped by new incentives, and continued strong in Britain.

France and Italy, the No. 3 and No. 4 markets, posted declines of 5.3 percent and 10.8 percent respectively.

?Angry? Obama says acting IRS chief fired over conservative targeting

President Barack Obama arrives at the East Room of the White House, May 15, 2013, to deliver remarks on the IRS??Bluntly declaring "I am angry" about the IRS scandal, President Barack Obama said late Wednesday that Treasury Secretary Jack Lew had forced out Steven Miller, the acting commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service. Speaking in the East Room of the White House, Obama called Miller's ouster "the first step" to prevent similar misconduct in the future and vowed to "do everything in my power" to make sure it never happens again.

Obama said he had reviewed the Treasury Department Inspector General's report that details how the IRS targeted conservative groups for special scrutiny when they applied for tax-exempt status.

"The misconduct that it uncovered is inexcusable. It's inexcusable, and Americans are right to be angry about it and I am angry about it," the president said in a brief prepared statement. "I will not tolerate this kind of behavior in any agency?but especially in the IRS, given the power that it has and the reach that it has into all of our lives."

Obama said the "responsible parties" will be held accountable. Lew "took the first step by requesting?and accepting?the resignation of the acting commissioner of the IRS because given the controversy surrounding this audit, it's important to institute new leadership that can help restore confidence going forward," Obama added.

The president's statement from the East Room of the White House came a little more than an hour after a meeting with senior Treasury Department officials to discuss the controversy.

Obama said he had directed the agency to implement recommendations from the inspector general?the Treasury's internal watchdog?to ensure no repeat of the "outrageous" misconduct. "The good news is it?s fixable," he said.

Looking to Capitol Hill, where lawmakers of both parties have denounced the IRS' behavior, Obama promised: "We will work with Congress as it performs its oversight role, and our administration has to make sure that we are working hand-in-hand with Congress to get this thing fixed."

Lawmakers, in turn, should "treat that authority with the responsibility it deserves and in a way that doesn?t smack of politics or partisan agendas," Obama said. He said Washington must "make sure that the laws are clear" and suggested that "too much ambiguity" may have played a role.

?I?ll do everything in my power to make sure nothing like this happens again?by holding the responsible parties accountable, by putting in place new checks and new safeguards, and, going forward, by making sure that the law is applied as it should be: In a fair and impartial way," Obama said.

Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell expressed skepticism.

?More than two years after the problem began, and a year after the IRS told us there was no problem, the President is beginning to take action," the Kentucky lawmaker said. "If the president is as concerned about this issue as he claims, he?ll work openly and transparently with Congress to get to the bottom of the scandal?no stonewalling, no half-answers, no withholding of witnesses."

Congress is "determined to get answers, and to ensure that this type of intimidation never happens again at the IRS or any other agency," McConnell said.

Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont was blunter, tweeting:

The President is right to dismiss the #IRS chief, and cleaning house may take more firings.

? Sen. Patrick Leahy (@SenatorLeahy) May 15, 2013

On Wednesday, Attorney General Eric Holder promised angry lawmakers that the Justice Department will undertake a national investigation into the IRS wrongdoing.

"We will take a dispassionate view of this," said Holder, who faced tough questioning from the House Judiciary Committee. "This will not be about parties ... anyone who has broken the law will be held accountable."

Holder said he had launched an investigation last Friday into why the IRS subjected conservative groups to more review when they applied for tax-exempt status. The IRS inspector general's report said that a group of low-level staffers in an Ohio office were responsible, and a top IRS official has apologized on their behalf.

But Holder promised that the investigation will look well beyond Ohio, and suggested that civil rights laws could have been violated.

Rep. Bobby Scott, D-Va., asked Holder at the hearing whether an "apology" from the IRS protected them from criminal prosecution. Holder answered, "No."

The Obama administration is under fire over the IRS, the president's handling of the Sept. 11, 2012, terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya, and the Justice Department's secret collection of telephone records of Associated Press reporters and editors.

Republicans have been hammering Obama on all three matters. While Democrats have largely defended him?and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton?on Benghazi, they have joined their GOP colleagues in denouncing the IRS and in expressing deep concerns about the AP phone records.

On Monday, Obama dismissed Republican charges of a cover-up in the Benghazi situation as a "sideshow" lacking any merit. He has yet to comment directly on the AP issue.

Scientific consensus on anthropogenic climate change

May 15, 2013 ? A comprehensive analysis of peer-reviewed articles on the topic of global warming and climate change has revealed an overwhelming consensus among scientists that recent warming is human-caused.

The study is the most comprehensive yet and identified 4000 summaries, otherwise known as abstracts, from papers published in the past 21 years that stated a position on the cause of recent global warming -- 97 per cent of these endorsed the consensus that we are seeing human-made, or anthropogenic, global warming (AGW)

Led by John Cook at the University of Queensland, the study has been published 16 May, in IOP Publishing's journal Environmental Research Letters.

The study went one step further, asking the authors of these papers to rate their entire paper using the same criteria. Over 2000 papers were rated and among those that discussed the cause of recent global warming, 97 per cent endorsed the consensus that it is caused by humans.

The findings are in stark contrast to the public's position on global warming; a 2012 poll* revealed that more than half of Americans either disagree, or are unaware, that scientists overwhelmingly agree that Earth is warming because of human activity.

John Cook said: "Our findings prove that there is a strong scientific agreement about the cause of climate change, despite public perceptions to the contrary.

"There is a gaping chasm between the actual consensus and the public perception. It's staggering given the evidence for consensus that less than half of the general public think scientists agree that humans are causing global warming.

"This is significant because when people understand that scientists agree on global warming, they're more likely to support policies that take action on it."

In March 2012, the researchers used the ISI Web of Science database to search for peer-reviewed academic articles published between 1991 and 2011 using two topic searches: "global warming" and "global climate change."

After limiting the selection to peer-reviewed climate science, the study considered 11 994 papers written by 29 083 authors in 1980 different scientific journals.

The abstracts from these papers were randomly distributed between a team of 24 volunteers recruited through the "myth-busting" website? skepticalscience.com, who used set criteria to determine the level to which the abstracts endorsed that humans are the primary cause of global warming. Each abstract was analyzed by two independent, anonymous raters.

From the 11,994 papers, 32.6 per cent endorsed AGW, 66.4 per cent stated no position on AGW, 0.7 per cent rejected AGW and in 0.3 per cent of papers, the authors said the cause of global warming was uncertain.

Co-author of the study Mark Richardson, from the University of Reading, said: "We want our scientists to answer questions for us, and there are lots of exciting questions in climate science. One of them is: are we causing global warming? We found over 4000 studies written by 10 000 scientists that stated a position on this, and 97 per cent said that recent warming is mostly man made."

Investing In Individuals: Future Royalties And Future Prospects ...

Royalty-exchangeFinancial news items periodically remind us that there are a variety of ways to raise funding from any asset or class of investors. David Bowie sold bonds backed by revenue from Bowie's recordings in the late 90s, now crowds fund a wide range of music projects for artists without previous access to such funding. A trend towards funding individuals is also emerging though with a focus on such assets as royalties or projects such as new ventures.

I remember being startled at the news of Bowie Bonds in 1997.

Since then I've realized that anything can be turned into a security but it was a trailblazing maneuver. The outcome was not as good as hoped for investors but music investments seem like an inherently unstable commodity.

Ben Sisario at The New York Times recently wrote about songwriter Preston Glass's use of The Royalty Exchange to auction partial royalty income.

It's an interesting look at a financial service for musicians, one that focuses on an actual asset, however volatile.

A new service called Upstart is designed to connect investors with students and young entrepreneurs in exchange for a limited percentage of their income over a specific period of time.

A number of those seeking funding, some of whom have achieved funding, are focused on music:

Trevor Collins

"Virginia Tech graduate seeking to build his online music [education] platform" Cloud Conservatory.

Richard Washington

"USC Marshall School of Business graduate seeking funds to develop and extend his social mobile application for music."

Kara Drake

"NYU MBA leaving corporate track to launch Signalfy - a platform for discovering & promoting EDM...events."

Omri Mor

"Music producer and recent graduate building a music platform for supporting and discovering new artists and bands."

Melanie Plageman

"Duke University graduate looking to build an online music platform in Kenya."

Shefali Kumar Friesen

"Entrepreneur, producer & singer looking to take patent-pending mobile technology to market, and complete production of solo album."

That's quite an array of projects and emphasizes the entrepreneurial focus of Upstart.

Though some on Upstart are seeking to reduce student debt, it seems to have the most potential as a funding and launch platform for new startups.

Nokia Lumia 925 hands-on (update: video)

Nokia Lumia 925 handson update video

At Nokia's London launch event, we've just managed to spend a bit of time with the gray version of the 4.5-inch Lumia 925. If you felt its polycarbonate predecessor was a little unwieldy in dimensions or weight, you might be pleased with what Nokia's crafted here. Its new Windows Phone flagship marks the company's return to metal-bodied smartphones, and in the process, it's become both lighter and thinner. This isn't a marginal shedding of a few grams, either -- there's a noticeable difference when compared to the Lumia 920. Likewise, the smaller frame makes the Lumia 920 feel all of a sudden rather chunky. Despite the slimmer lines, Nokia keeps the internal specifications largely the same, so you're getting an identical dual-core 1.5GHz processor and 1GB of RAM, although this time there's only 16GB of storage -- sacrifices had to be made somewhere, we guess.

Imaging-wise, and yes, it's still all about the camera with Nokia, there's the same 8.7-megapixel camera sensor from the 920 model, although Nokia says it's made countless improvements to noise-reduction algorithms and other inner workings. While the hardware has remained mostly unchanged, the company's gone to town on the camera app, moving beyond the Windows Phone Lens system to craft a new Smart Cam interface. Our favorite part here is the ability to leap straight into it instead of the standard camera app. Once we set it up within the app itself, it launched just as swiftly as the regular option. Performance, in general, was identical to what we've experienced on both the 928 and 920 (the same processor will do that), keeping up with our task transitions and web-browsing tests. We're putting the finishing touches to our hands-on video, but you can find more impressions on the hardware (and that Smart Cam) after our gallery and the break.

Update: Now with video!
