Sun block for the 'Big Dog'

Thursday, March 28, 2013

An international team of astronomers, including researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy and from the University of Cologne, successfully identified two titanium oxides in the extended atmosphere around a giant star. The object VY Canis Major is one of the largest stars in the known universe and close to the end of its life. The detection was made using telescope arrays in the USA and in France.

The discovery was made in the course of a study of a spectacular star, VY Canis Majoris or VY CMa for short, which is a variable star located in the constellation Canis Major (Greater Dog). "VY CMa is not an ordinary star, it is one of the largest stars known, and it is close the end of its life," says Tomasz Kami?ski from the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy (MPIfR). In fact, with a size of about one to two thousand times that of the Sun, it could extend out to the orbit of Saturn if it were placed in the centre of our Solar System.

The star ejects large quantities of material which forms a dusty nebula. It becomes visible because of the small dust particles that form around it which reflect light from the central star. The complexity of this nebula has been puzzling astronomers for decades. It has been formed as a result of stellar wind, but it is not understood well why it is so far from having a spherical shape.

Neither is known what physical process blows the wind, i.e. what lifts the material up from the stellar surface and makes it expand. "The fate of VY CMa is to explode as a supernova, but it is not known exactly when it will happen", adds Karl Menten, head of the "Millimetre and Submillimetre Astronomy" Department at MPIfR.

Observations at different wavelengths provide different pieces of information which is characteristic for atomic and molecular gas and from which physical properties of an astronomical object can be derived. Each molecule has a characteristic set of lines, something like a 'bar code', that allows to identify what molecules exist in the nebula.

"Emission at short radio wavelengths, in so-called submillimetre waves, is particularly useful for such studies of molecules", says Sandra Br?nken from the University of Cologne. "The identification of molecules is easier and usually a larger abundance of molecules can be observed than at other parts of the electromagnetic spectrum."

The research team observed TiO and TiO2 for the first time at radio wavelengths. In fact, titanium dioxide has been seen in space unambiguously for the first time. It is known from every-day life as the main component of the commercially most important white pigment (known by painters as "titanium white") or as an ingredient in sunscreens. It is also quite possible that the reader consumed some amounts of it as it is used to colour food (coded as E171 in the labels).

However, stars, especially the coolest of them, are expected to eject large quantities of titanium oxides, which, according to theory, form at relatively high temperatures close to the star. "They tend to cluster together to form dust particles visible in the optical or in the infrared," says Nimesh Patel from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. "And the catalytic properties of TiO2 may influence the chemical processes taking place on these dust particles, which are very important for forming larger molecules in space", adds Holger M?ller from the University of Cologne.

Absorption features of TiO have been known from spectra in the visible region for more than a hundred years. In fact, these features are used in part to classify some types of stars with low surface temperatures (M- and S-type stars). The pulsation of Mira stars, one specific class of variable stars, is thought to be caused by titanium oxide. Mira stars, supergiant variable stars in a late stage of their evolution, are named after their prototype star "Mira" (the wonderful) in the constellation of Cetus (the 'sea monster' or the 'whale').

The observations of TiO and TiO2 show that the two molecules are easily formed around VY CMa at a location that is more or less as predicted by theory. It seems, however, that some portion of those molecules avoid forming dust and are observable as gas phase species. Another possibility is that the dust is destroyed in the nebula and releases fresh TiO molecules back to the gas. The latter scenario is quite likely as parts of the wind in VY CMa seem to collide with each other.

The new detections at submillimetre wavelengths are particularly important because they allow studying the process of dust formation. Also, at optical wavelengths, the radiation emitted by the molecules is scattered by dust present in the extended nebula which blurs the picture, while this effect is negligible at radio wavelengths allowing for more precise measurements.

The discoveries of TiO and TiO2 in the spectrum of VY CMa have been made with the Submillimetre Array (SMA), a radio interferometer located at Hawaii, USA. Because the instrument combines eight antennas which worked together as one big telescope 226-meters in size, astronomers were able to make observations at unprecedented sensitivity and angular resolution. A confirmation of the new detections was successively made later with the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI) located in the French Alps.

Cara Joy David: And Then Narcissus Leaned Towards the Water

I love going to regional theaters. Often, on vacation, I find myself at the theater. This seems odd to people, because I go to the theater so often in New York, but it makes perfect sense to me; I enjoy the theater. I'm also fascinated by the different audiences around the country and the business of regional theaters. After all, those theaters are often a breading ground for what we see here in NYC.

Usually, I only go see new shows out-of-town. But occasionally I see revivals of shows I truly love. (Ford's Theatre, expect me for Violet.) When I heard Mary Zimmerman was putting on a revival of Metamorphoses with much of the original cast, I knew I had to go. The revival first played at the show's original home, Chicago's Lookinglass Theatre, where Zimmerman is an ensemble member. It is now playing at the Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., where I saw it a couple of weeks ago.

It has been about a decade since I saw a major production of Metamorphoses and about the same amount of time since I was at the Arena Stage. The Arena Stage is much changed since I was last there -- since fall of 2010 it has been housed in the Mead Center for America Theater, a modern facility with three venues inside it. I was impressed by the space -- it's clean and well-kept. And, though I hadn't been there in many years, I have kept up with Artistic Director Molly Smith's choices. In a world where many regional theaters, facing public funding cuts, are making safe choices to hold onto their subscriber base, Smith takes risks. Some of her choices are divisive, but at least she does things that spark discussions.

Of course, a production of Metamorphoses, Zimmerman's most acclaimed work, wasn't a risky proposition. Metamorphoses, unlike the Arena, was much the same as it was when I last saw it. On the negative side, the show seemed literally brighter than it had in New York, which I thought detracted from some of the stage beauty. On the positive side, there, onstage before me, was the Metamorphoses I remember. Yes, the pool and the theater are different, but, it doesn't matter. There is still something so magical about it.

In New York, Zimmerman's poetic intertwining of Ovid's stories was wrapped in publicity spin about healing from 9/11. I wondered if it would play differently outside of that context. It did not. Zimmerman's work stands on its own. She has created a work of compassion that somehow eschews pretentiousness, despite its sometimes lofty lessons.

Years ago, in between the Broadway run and this Arena mounting, I ventured with my friend Devika (a devoted follower of the NY production), to a small theater in Los Angeles to see a tiny, tiny production of Metamorphoses. The pool sort of looked like it came from a Saturday Night Live sketch about a play set in water. I think my college friends, with no acting experience, would have given better performances. And the boring parts of the text, and there are some, were so draggy, people near me fell asleep. But it was still Zimmerman's lyrical script and there was still a feeling of enchantment when we sat there listening to it (picturing, as Devika and I both could, Zimmerman's original staging).

Sitting at Arena, it was great to see Doug Hara floating on the pool, Chris Kipiniak (who has become a YouTube sensation thanks to the "Real Actors Read Yelp" series) being enraptured by hunger and Raymond Fox turning everything to gold. It was all just as I remembered. (Though I did miss Mariann Mayberry.) If anything, there was something even more emotional about it now. Perhaps the performances have grown with time (though I don't think so), or perhaps my own growth has created a greater understanding of the stories, or perhaps I'm now just comparing this version to the last one I saw in LA , but for some reason, I was more transported by this Metamorphoses. There is something about Zimmerman's ability--even in her lesser achievements--to imbue each moment of a show with meaning (whether easily understood or not). I look forward to seeing her Jungle Book.

I hope this Metamorphoses comes back to New York, but, if it doesn't, I am happy audiences can see it now at Arena.

Are There Too Many Ph.D.s And Not Enough Jobs?

Our country needs more people with science, math and engineering degrees ? at least, that's the common refrain among politicians and educators.

American students lag behind the rest of the world when it comes to math and science test scores, and the president and others have called for a change in immigration laws that would make it easier for people who come to the U.S. to get technical degrees to stay in the country permanently.

The number of PhD students who had a job by graduation has been going down, while the numbers of those who didn't or those who were continuing with studies is going up.

But job numbers released by the National Science Foundation show that people with doctoral degrees in those technical fields are struggling to find work in their industries.

Jordan Weissmann, an editor at The Atlantic, analyzed the latest NSF figures. Upon graduation, he says, "Ph.D.s in general have a less than 50 percent chance of having a full-time job, and that percentage has been decreasing for about 20 years."

Worse yet, as of 2011, approximately one-third of people graduating with a doctoral degree in science, technology, math or engineering had no job or post-doctoral offer of any kind.

These figures are not surprising to many young scientists and engineers who feel the employment squeeze.

John Choiniere, who lives in Seattle, earned a doctorate in analytical chemistry in December. Now, he's unemployed.

"I really want to be able to support my family, and I thought getting a Ph.D. in chemistry would be a great way to do that, but so far, not a lot of luck with that," he says.

But, Weissmann says, there is a silver lining: Those who earn doctoral degrees in technical fields are not likely to face chronic, long-term unemployment.

"I think you look at the science and engineering fields in general, and across all age groups they tend to have extremely low unemployment. You know, maybe 3 percent or so," he says. "I think the question isn't necessarily unemployment, but underemployment certainly is a very live issue in these fields."

Day 59: A Night At Home With The Family | Every Day, For A Year

March 10, 2013 ? 9:14 pm

Tonight is my night home and it was near close to perfect. I got home and relaxed for a bit before mom suggested making cheeseburgers on the grill. We all agreed immediately.

59.1

Sydney and mom ate in the living room for some reason and Taylor and I ate in the dining room. Sorry for the photo Syd, it just felt right.

59.2

After dinner Syd and I made a cake together and by Syd and I, I mean I watched her in the kitchen as she baked her heart out. Then I helped Tay pick out more details for his house. He agreed with me on most things. I like classic, traditional interiors and details that give a house character like thick moulding, built-in bookshelves, subway tile, and sconces. He likes about half of those things.

Now we are ending the night by watching Shakespeare in Love, a movie that, surprisingly, none of us have seen. We are wondering what all the buzz is about and why it won 7 Academy Awards, but so far it is good. I don?t know about Best Picture quality, but entertaining nonetheless.

(AP) ? Venezuelans will vote April 14 to choose a successor to Hugo Chavez, the elections commission announced Saturday as increasingly strident political rhetoric begins to roil this polarized country.

The constitution mandated the election be held within 30 days of Chavez's March 5 death, but the date picked falls outside that period. Critics of the socialist government already complained that officials violated the constitution by swearing in Vice President Nicolas Maduro as acting leader Friday night.

Some people have speculated Venezuela will not be ready to organize the vote in time, but elections council chief Tibisay Lucena said the country's electronic voting system was fully prepared.

Lucena announced the date on state television while a small inset in the picture showed people filing past Chavez's coffin at the military academy in Caracas, where his body has lain in state since Wednesday.

Chavez's boisterous state funeral Friday often felt like a political rally for his anointed successor, Maduro, who eulogized him by pledging eternal loyalty and vowing Chavez's movement will never be defeated. Maduro is expected to run as the candidate of Chavez's socialist party.

Ramon Guillermo Aveledo, coordinator of the opposition coalition, immediately followed the election announcement by offering his bloc's presidential candidacy to Henrique Capriles, the governor of Miranda state who lost to Chavez in October. A Capriles adviser said the governor would announce his decision Sunday.

David Smilde, an analyst with the U.S.-based Washington Office on Latin America, said the opposition needs to run a candidate in the presidential election even though he believes it will almost certainly lose.

Smilde said he wasn't sure Capriles will accept the candidacy.

"If he says he doesn't want to run I could totally understand that," Smilde said. "He is likely going to lose, and if he loses this election, he's probably going to be done."

In that case the opposition would be wise to run someone such as Caracas Mayor Antonio Ledesma or Henry Falcone, governor of Lara state and one of just three opposition governors, he said.

That would give the opposition an opportunity to clearly articulate its platform and vision.

"Really what this campaign would be about is allowing the opposition to put themselves in position for the future, to show that they have some ideas for the country," Smilde said.

In his speech after his swearing-in Friday, Maduro took shots at the United States, the media, international capitalism and domestic opponents he often depicted as treacherous. He claimed the allegiance of Venezuela's army, referring to them as the "armed forces of Chavez," despite the constitution barring the military from taking sides in politics.

The opposition has denounced the transition as an unconstitutional power grab, while the government moves to immortalize Chavez. Since his death, the former paratrooper has been compared to Jesus Christ and early-19th century Venezuelan liberator Simon Bolivar, and the government announced that his body would be embalmed and put on eternal display.

Edith Palmeira, a 47-year-old Caracas resident at a park Saturday in central Caracas, said she would vote for Maduro, but made clear her allegiance was based purely on her love of Chavez.

"Imitations are never as good as the original," Palmeira said. "But I think he must have grown as a person during so much time at the president's side. He must have learned to be a president."

Elvira Orozco, a 31-year-old business owner, said she planned to sit out the vote to protest Maduro's swearing-in Friday.

"What they want is to say that here there's a democracy, but here they violate the constitution and there's no authority who says anything," Orozco said.

Observers voiced mounting concern about the deep political divide gripping Venezuela, with half of it in a near frenzy of adulation and the other feeling targeted.

"Everything that happened yesterday (with the funeral and Maduro's speech) are outward signs of a fascistic aesthetic, complete with armbands," said Vicente Gonzalez de la Vega, a professor of law at Caracas' Universidad Metropolitana. "It is the cult of the adored leader, an escape from reality. ... They are trying to impose on the rest of the country a new pagan religion."

He said the ruling party was playing with fire with its strong nationalistic rhetoric and the implication that a vote against Maduro was somehow subversive.

Capriles, too, has used emotionally charged language in his public comments. On Friday he denounced Maduro as a shameless liar who had not been elected by the people, and condescendingly referred to him as "boy."

Opposition figures have said they are concerned about the election's fairness, particularly given the public vows of allegiance to Chavez from senior military officials. Capriles lost to Chavez in Oct. 7 elections, but he garnered 45 percent of the vote, which was the most anyone had ever won against the late president.

A boycott of 2005 legislative elections was widely seen as disastrous for the opposition, letting Chavez's supporters win all 167 seats and allowing him to govern unimpeded by any legislative rivals.

(AP) ? Magnum P.I., Ron Burgundy and Ron Swanson would be impressed.

Organizers of an annual laugh festival in Michigan say they've broken the world record for the most people wearing fake mustaches.

Gilda's LaughFest is reporting that 1,544 people donned various shapes and sizes of dark 'staches on Thursday, the Grand Rapids festival's opening day.

The record is awaiting Guinness World Record certification.

If it sticks, the record would be the third set at the festival in as many years. Last year the festival broke the record for the most people wearing fake animal noses. The year before, it was people tossing rubber chickens.

LaughFest officials say the previous fake mustache record of 648 participants was set in September at a St. Louis Rams event.

Natural News: TSA - Just Theater and Make Believe? Apparently So

"Last week, an undercover TSA inspector managed to quite easily sneak a mock explosive device through airport security and onto an airplane. He simply stuffed the fake bomb down his pants and went right through the screenings, including a pat-down. Out of several covert TSA agents attempting to sneak mock explosive devices onto the airplane, only one was pulled aside, and she was carrying a child's doll with wires hanging out the back, making it ridiculously obvious.

This episode once again demonstrates how Newark Airport is the Ground Zero of TSA failures," said a source published in the NY Post, a newspaper that's been breaking huge news on the TSA (and actually doing a far better job reporting on this than the NYT).

But the real news isn't the fact that, time and time again, government officials can easily sneak explosives onto airplanes. The real story is what happened a few days later, when a TSA employee who works at Newark went public with allegations that the TSA is nothing more than pure theater and that TSA employees have no ability or motivation to catch any terrorists whatsoever."

However, i would suggest that beyond the above revelation TSA does serve some useful psychopathic purposes -- among them, the screening devices, etc. made a fortune for certain dual citizen/insiders, and the behaviors of the TSA cretins helped the travelling public to become more used to "obeying" what passes for "authority" on this planet.

The bacteria, said to be only 86 percent similar to other types known to exist on Earth, was discovered in a water sample taken from?Lake Vostok, which sits under more than 2 miles (3 kilometers) of Antarctic ice. The freshwater lake has likely been buried, unaltered, under the ice for the past million years.

Russian scientists reportedly obtained the water samples in 2012 when they drilled?all the way down to the lake's surface. They ran the bacteria's composition through a global database and were not able to find anything similar to its type. Scientists couldn't even figure out the bacteria's descendents.

"After putting aside all possible elements of contamination, DNA was found that did not coincide with any of the well-known types in the global database," said Sergey Bulat, a geneticist at the Saint Petersburg Institute of Nuclear Physics, in a quote attributed in media reports to RIA Novosti news service.

"We are calling this life form unclassified and unidentified," he added.

Understanding the environment

While the bacteria still needs to be confirmed, its potential is already drawing attention from other Antarctic scientists.

Life forms are shaped by the environment they live in, and often shape that environment in return. Finding out more about bacteria in Lake Vostok, therefore, will help researchers picture what living in the lake is like for these tiny microorganisms.

"The study of looking at the organisms and their environment is really the study of ecology," said Alison Murray, an associate research professor at the Desert Research Institute (an environmental research group based in Nevada) who also?does Antarctic research?herself.

"By learning more about the life forms that live in Vostok, that will probably teach us a bit about the lake itself," Murray told OurAmazingPlanet.

Murray, who is familiar with the Russian researchers' work, said the group is a "very careful team of scientists" who would have put the bacteria through several validity tests before releasing the news.

Understanding bacterial life on Earth is also considered a possible research direction for finding life on other planets,?including Mars.

'If this is real, it is very exciting'

The 86 percent similarity figure, to Murray, is a plausible indicator that this could be a new type of bacteria. Since all Earthly life is related to each other in some way, anything below about 80 percent would draw concern, Murray added.

At least one other scientist, however, expressed caution about the finding, saying that more information is needed before drawing conclusions.

"If this is real, it is very exciting," Peter Doran, a microbiologist at the University of Illinois at Chicago, wrote in an e-mail to OurAmazingPlanet. He is a frequent visitor to the Arctic and Antarctica for his research.

"I would caution, though, that this type of 'press release' science is a little dangerous. It really needs to go through the rigor of peer review by other experts in the field before I'll jump on board," he said. "Having others looking at their methods and data will provide support for their conclusions."

Russian scientists successfully?dug through to the buried lake?again in January this year, retrieving more samples for later analysis.

Meanwhile, a British team had to?call off their quest in December?to dig to Lake Ellsworth, another Antarctic subglacial lake, after they encountered technical difficulties.

As Venezuelans mourn, election set for April

CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela will hold a presidential election on April 14, officials said on Saturday, as acting President Nicolas Maduro tries to benefit from an emotional outpouring for his late mentor, Hugo Chavez, and win his own term in office.

Maduro, a physically imposing former union leader who served as foreign minister and vice president under Chavez, has vowed to keep Chavez's self-styled socialist revolution alive.

He will likely face off against Henrique Capriles, 40, the centrist governor of Miranda state. Capriles, who lost to Chavez in a vote last October, thanked Venezuela's opposition coalition on Saturday for backing him as its candidate, but stopped short of explicitly accepting the nomination.

Opinion polls have shown Maduro as the likely winner, but Chavez's opponents said they wanted a chance to end "Chavismo" at the voting booth.

Opinion polls have shown Maduro as the likely winner, but Chavez's opponents said they wanted a chance to end "Chavismo" at the voting booth. "We want change. We are tired of the Chavez era. It's been 14 years," said Yesenia Herrera, 33, a cook at a Chinese restaurant in an affluent quarter of Caracas.

Maduro was sworn in as acting president in Congress on Friday and handed the red, yellow and blue presidential sash.

"I asked (the election authority) to comply with legal and constitutional obligations and immediately call elections," Maduro, 50, told Congress as he cemented his position as heir-in-waiting.

Chavez was immensely popular among the poor and they have vowed to back Maduro. Millions have filed past his casket to pay their last respects and were still visiting him on Saturday.

The Supreme Court has ruled Maduro does not need to step down in order to campaign, but the move was denounced by opponents as a violation of the constitution and a "fraud."

As Maduro spoke in Congress, residents of some wealthy neighborhoods of Caracas banged pots and pans in a traditional form of protest. At one building in a wealthy corner of Caracas, people drank wine and whisky around a swimming pool, rejoicing at Chavez's demise. They toasted each other, "Happy goodbye, Chavez, we will not miss you!"

HERO OR AUTOCRAT?

Chavez was a hero to millions of mostly poor supporters for using Venezuela's oil wealth to finance heavy social spending, but he was seen as an autocrat by his opponents. He died on Tuesday at age 58 after a two-year battle with cancer.

"The excluded and invisible, the 'losers' of savage capitalism, were made visible and victorious with Chavez," Information Minister Ernesto Villegas said on Twitter.

Like communist leaders Lenin, Stalin and Mao, Chavez's remains are to be embalmed and put on display "for eternity."

An eclectic cast of celebrities, leftist and center-right presidents attended Chavez's state funeral on Friday. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, a close ally, broke with protocol to kiss the coffin, while Oscar-winning actor Sean Penn was also in attendance.

It is likely to be a particularly bitter election campaign in the OPEC heavyweight nation, which boasts the world's largest proven oil reserves.

The opposition had accused the government of trampling on the constitution during its handling of Chavez's battle with cancer, and is furious that Maduro was allowed to take on the job of caretaker president while he campaigns for the job.

"This transgression is unprecedented in the history of the republic," opposition lawmaker Maria Corina Machado said on Twitter.

Capriles called it an abuse of power.

"To become president, the people have to elect you," he said on Friday. "No one elected Nicolas president."

Culture, education, language, and thinking | Interfaces.com

How we think about problems depends in part of how we are taught to do so. And that education is seeped in our culture and language. Metaphors, mnemonics, analogies, riddles, word choice for explanations are tightly interwoven into our language. Just like it was probably impossible for Romans to invent calculus given their numeral system, it is difficult to think clearly about some problems in some languages. I?ve learned advanced physics and mathematics in English and find it very difficult to express thoughts in those domains in Russian (my native language). But when I first came to New York, I marveled at how poor my cohorts? geometry proofs were ? their presentations took a lot of space and too many steps to achieve what I was taught to do in minimal configuration. I was taught to jump and bound from concept to concept (in geometry), while the students in America were taught to crawl through ideas. I found that maddening! But it was a different math language, and as such it allowed for a different set of affordances?

It is difficult to easily show the differences in thought process that language makes in this short blog. But here?s a bit on difference in thoughts that culture and background knowledge makes ? these are analogies taken from high school students? writing. Notice the strong anchor of time and place. Enjoy!

  • Her face was a perfect oval, like a circle that had its two sides gently compressed by a Thigh Master.
  • His thoughts tumbled in his head, making and breaking alliances like underpants in a dryer without Cling Free.
  • He spoke with the wisdom that can only come from experience, like a
guy who went blind because he looked at a solar eclipse without one of those boxes with a pinhole in it and now goes around the country speaking at high schools about the dangers of looking at a solar eclipse without one of those boxes with a pinhole in it.
  • She grew on him like she was a colony of E. coli and he was room-temperature Canadian beef.
  • She had a deep, throaty, genuine laugh, like that sound a dog makes just before it throws up.
  • Her vocabulary was as bad as, like, whatever.
  • He was as tall as a six-foot-three-inch tree.
  • The revelation that his marriage of 30 years had disintegrated because of his wife?s infidelity came as a rude shock, like a surcharge at a formerly surcharge-free ATM.
  • The little boat gently drifted across the pond exactly the way a bowling ball wouldn?t.
  • McBride fell 12 stories, hitting the pavement like a Hefty bag filled with vegetable soup.
  • From the attic came an unearthly howl. The whole scene had an eerie, unreal quality, like when you?re on vacation in another city and Jeopardy comes on at 7:00 p.m. instead of 7:30.
  • Her hair glistened in the rain like a nose hair after a sneeze.
  • The hailstones leaped from the pavement, just like maggots when you fry them in hot grease.
  • Long separated by cruel fate, the star-crossed lovers raced across the grassy field toward each other like two freight trains, one having left Cleveland at 6:36 p.m. traveling at 55 mph, the other from Topeka at 4:19 p.m. at a speed of 35 mph.
  • They lived in a typical suburban neighborhood with picket fences that resembled Nancy Kerrigan?s teeth.
  • John and Mary had never met. They were like two hummingbirds who had also never met.
  • He fell for her like his heart was a mob informant and she was the East River.
  • Even in his last years, Grandpappy had a mind like a steel trap, only one that had been left out so long, it had rusted shut.
  • Shots rang out, as shots are wont to do.
  • The plan was simple, like my brother-in-law Phil. But unlike Phil, this plan just might work.
  • The young fighter had a hungry look, the kind you get from not eating for a while.
  • He was as lame as a duck. Not the metaphorical lame duck, either, but a real duck that was actually lame. Maybe from stepping on a land mine or something.
  • The ballerina rose gracefully en pointe and extended one slender leg behind her, like a dog at a fire hydrant.
  • It was an American tradition, like fathers chasing kids around with power tools.
  • He was deeply in love. When she spoke, he thought he heard bells, as if she were a garbage truck backing up.
  • Her eyes were like limpid pools, only they had forgotten to put in any pH cleanser.

PS: I?ve been collecting these types of analogies for years. Unfortunately, I no longer have the reference for the one above.

Canon Pixma MX522 Wireless Office All-In-One Printer

Basically a beefed-up version of the Canon Pixma MX452 Wireless Office All-In-One Printer that I recently reviewed, the Canon Pixma MX522 Wireless Office All-In-One Printer adds enough extras to easily justify the higher price. Most notably, it adds an Ethernet port, a duplexer (for two-sided printing), a color LCD for the front panel menu, and the ability to print from a USB memory key. The extras make it that much more attractive as either a personal printer in any size office or for the dual role of home and home-office printer.

Like the Canon MX452, the MX522 can print and fax from, as well as scan to, a PC, and it can work as a standalone copier and fax machine. For scanning, it offers the same capability as well, with a letter-size flatbed supplemented by a 30-page automatic document feeder that can handle legal size pages. It also offers the same ability to scan to a USB key, but adds printing from a USB key as well, with the ability to preview the files on its 2.5-inch color LCD.

In theory, given that the MX522 offers both Ethernet and Wi-Fi, you can use it as a shared printer. In practice, however, its 100-sheet paper capacity limits its usefulness for sharing, except for the dual roll of home and home-office printer. Even by micro-office standards, a 100-sheet input tray is likely to empty out often enough to make refilling it a minor annoyance. Very much on the plus side, if you need to print duplex documents even occasionally, the automatic duplexer is a welcome convenience.

Other conveniences worth mention are support for printing through the cloud and support for AirPrint. You can't connect directly to the printer by Wi-Fi to use AirPrint, however. The printer and your phone or tablet will have to connect through a Wi-Fi access point on your network. One other convenience, primarily for home use, is Wireless PictBridge for printing wirelessly from a camera. However, the feature works only with select Canon cameras.

Setup, Speed, and Output Quality
For my tests, I connected the printer to a wired network and installed the drivers and software on a Windows Vista system. Setup was standard fare.

Unfortunately, print speed is not one of the MX522's strong points. When I reviewed the MX452, I pointed out that it was a little slow, but not unusually slow for the price. The MX522 isn't any faster. Given that it costs more, however, the speed is more of an issue.

Canon Pixma MX522 Wireless Office All-In-One Printer

On our business applications suite, I clocked the MX522 (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing) at the same 2.1 pages per minute (ppm) as I got for the MX452. In comparison, the similarly priced Editors' Choice Epson WorkForce WF-3520was more than twice as fast, at 4.4 ppm. Photo speed was also slow, averaging 2 minutes 9 seconds for a 4 by 6. The WF-3520 came in at just 1:12.

As with the Canon MX452, the MX522 does much better on output quality than on speed. It delivered better text in my tests than most inkjet MFPs, par quality for graphics, and just barely par quality for photos.

That makes both text and graphics good enough for most business needs, with the graphics output easily suitable for PowerPoint handouts and the like. Depending on your level of perfectionism, you may or may not consider the graphics quality good enough for output going to an important client or customer when you need it to look fully professional. Photo quality is roughly a match for the low end of what you would expect from drug store prints.

I'd like this printer a lot more if it offered higher paper capacity and better speed. However, it balances its shortcomings in both with its output quality for text and graphics and its full set of office-oriented MFP features, including the ADF, duplexer, standalone and PC-based faxing, and ability to scan to and print from a USB key. If you need more heavy-duty printing, be sure to look at the Epson WorkForce WF-3520. But if you don't print a lot of pages, the Canon Pixma MX522 Wireless Office All-In-One Printer can serve nicely for light-duty print needs with an emphasis on output quality.

(AP) ? Cardinals from around the world gather this week in a conclave to elect a new pope following the stunning resignation of Benedict XVI. In the secretive world of the Vatican, there is no way to know who is in the running, and history has yielded plenty of surprises. Yet several names have come up repeatedly as strong contenders. Here is a look at who they are:

___

CARDINAL ANGELO SCOLA: Scola is seen as Italy's best chance at reclaiming the papacy, following back-to-back pontiffs from outside the country that had a lock on the job for centuries. He's also one of the top names among all of the papal contenders. Scola, 71, has commanded both the pulpits of Milan's Duomo as archbishop and Venice's St. Mark's Cathedral as patriarch, two extremely prestigious church positions that together gave the world five popes during the 20th century. Scola was widely viewed as a papal contender when Benedict was elected eight years ago. His promotion to Milan, Italy's largest and most influential diocese, has been seen as a tipping point in making him one of the leading papal candidates. He is known as a doctrinal conservative who is also at ease quoting Jack Kerouac and Cormac McCarthy.

___

CARDINAL ODILO SCHERER: Scherer is known for prolific tweeting, appearances on Brazil's most popular late-night talk show and squeezing into the subway for morning commutes. Brazil's best hope to supply the next pontiff is increasingly being touted as one of the top overall contenders. At the relatively young age of 63, he enthusiastically embraces all new methods for reaching believers, while staying true to a conservative line of Roman Catholic doctrine and hardline positions on social issues such as rejection of same-sex marriage. Scherer joined Twitter in 2011 and in his second tweet said: "If Jesus preached the gospel today, he would also use print media, radio, TV, the Internet and Twitter. Give Him a chance!" Scherer became the Sao Paulo archbishop in 2007 and was named a cardinal later the same year.

___

CARDINAL MARC OUELLET: Canada's Ouellet once said that being pope "would be a nightmare." He would know, having enjoyed the confidence of two popes as a top-ranked Vatican insider. His high-profile position as head of the Vatican's office for bishops, his conservative leanings, his years in Latin America and his work in Rome as president of a key commission for Latin America all make him a favorite to become the first pontiff from the Americas. But the qualities that make the 68-year-old popular in Latin America ? home to the world's biggest Catholic population ? and among the cardinals who elect the pope have contributed to his poor image in his native Quebec, where ironically he was perceived during his tenure as archbishop as an outsider parachuted in from Rome to reorder his liberal province along conservative lines.

___

CARDINAL PETER ERDO: Erdo is the son of a deeply religious couple who defied communist repression in Hungary to practice their faith. And if elected pope, the 60-year-old would be the second pontiff to come from eastern Europe ? following in the footsteps of the late John Paul II, a Pole who left a great legacy helping to topple communism. A cardinal since 2003, Erdo is an expert on canon law and distinguished university theologian who has also striven to forge close ties to the parish faithful. He is increasingly seen as a compromise candidate if cardinals are unable to rally around some of the more high-profile figures like Scola or Scherer.

___

CARDINAL GIANFRANCO RAVASI: Ravasi, the Vatican's culture minister, is an erudite scholar with a modern touch ? just the combination some faithful see as ideal for reviving a church beset by scandal and a shrinking flock. The 70-year-old is also one of the favorites among Catholics who long to see a return to the tradition of Italian popes. The polyglot biblical scholar peppers speeches with references ranging from Aristotle to late British diva Amy Winehouse. Ravasi's foreign language prowess is reminiscent of that of the late globetrotting John Paul II: He tweets in English, chats in Italian and has impressed his audiences by switching to Hebrew and Arabic in some of his speeches.

___

CARDINAL PETER TURKSON: Often cast as the social conscience of the church, Ghana's Turkson is viewed by many as the top African contender for pope. The 64-year-old head of the Vatican's peace and justice office was widely credited with helping to avert violence following contested Ghanaian elections. He has aggressively fought African poverty, while disappointing many by hewing to the church's conservative line on condom use amid Africa's AIDS epidemic. Turkson's reputation as a man of peace took a hit recently when he showed a virulently anti-Islamic video, a move now seen as hurting his papal prospects. Observers say those prospects sank further when he broke a taboo against public jockeying for the papacy ? saying the day after Benedict's resignation announcement that he's up for the job "if it's the will of God."

___

CARDINAL TIMOTHY DOLAN: Dolan, the 63-year-old archbishop of New York, is an upbeat, affable defender of Catholic orthodoxy, and a well-known religious figure in the United States. He holds a job Pope John Paul II once called "archbishop of the capital of the world." His colleagues broke with protocol in 2010 and made him president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, instead of elevating the sitting vice president as expected. And during the 2012 presidential election, Republicans and Democrats competed over which national political convention the cardinal would bless. He did both. But scholars question whether his charisma and experience are enough for a real shot at succeeding Benedict.

___

CARDINAL JORGE MARIO BERGOGLIO: Bergoglio, 76, has spent nearly his entire career at home in Argentina, overseeing churches and shoe-leather priests. The archbishop of Buenos Aires reportedly got the second-most votes after Joseph Ratzinger in the 2005 papal election, and he has long specialized in the kind of pastoral work that some say is an essential skill for the next pope. In a lifetime of teaching and leading priests in Latin America, which has the largest share of the world's Catholics, Bergoglio has shown a keen political sensibility as well as the kind of self-effacing humility that fellow cardinals value highly. Bergoglio is known for modernizing an Argentine church that had been among the most conservative in Latin America.

___

CARDINAL LEONARDO SANDRI: Leonardo Sandri, 69, is a Vatican insider who has run the day-to-day operations of the global church's vast bureaucracy and roamed the world as a papal diplomat. He left his native Argentina for Rome at 27 and never returned to live in his homeland. Initially trained as a canon lawyer, he reached the No. 3 spot in the church's hierarchy under Pope John Paul II, the zenith of a long career in the Vatican's diplomatic service ranging from Africa to Mexico to Washington. As substitute secretary of state for seven years, he essentially served as the pope's chief of staff. The jovial diplomat has been knighted in a dozen countries, and the church he is attached to as cardinal is Rome's exquisite, baroque San Carlo ai Catinari.

___

CARDINAL LUIS ANTONIO TAGLE: Asia's most prominent Roman Catholic leader knows how to reach the masses: He sings on stage, preaches on TV, brings churchgoers to laughter and tears with his homilies. And he's on Facebook. But the 55-year-old Filipino's best response against the tide of secularism, clergy sex abuse scandals and rival-faith competition could be his reputation for humility. His compassion for the poor and unassuming ways have impressed followers in his homeland, Asia's largest Catholic nation, and church leaders in the Vatican. Tagle's chances are considered remote, as many believe that Latin America or Africa ? with their faster-growing Catholic flocks ? would be more logical choices if the papal electors look beyond Europe.

___

CARDINAL CHRISTOPH SCHOENBORN: Schoenborn is a soft-spoken conservative who is ready to listen to those espousing reform. That profile could appeal to fellow cardinals looking to elect a pontiff with the widest-possible appeal to the world's 1 billion Catholics. His Austrian nationality may be his biggest disadvantage: Electors may be reluctant to choose another German speaker as a successor to Benedict. A man of low tolerance for the child abuse scandals roiling the church, Schoenborn, 68, himself was elevated to the upper echelons of the Catholic hierarchy after his predecessor resigned 18 years ago over accusations that he was a pedophile.

___

CARDINAL MALCOLM RANJITH: Benedict XVI picked the Sri Lankan Ranjith to return from Colombo to the Vatican to oversee the church's liturgy and rites in one of his first appointments as pope. The choice of Ranjith in 2005 rewarded a strong voice of tradition ? so rigid that some critics regard it even as backward-looking. Ranjith in 2010 was named Sri Lanka's second cardinal in history. There are many strikes against a Ranjith candidacy ? Sri Lanka, for example, has just 1.3 million Catholics, less than half the population of Rome. But the rising influence of the developing world, along with the 65-year-old's strong conservative credentials, helps keep his name in the mix of papal contenders.

___

CARDINAL ANDRES RODRIGUEZ MARADIAGA: To many, Maradiaga embodies the activist wing of the Roman Catholic Church as an outspoken campaigner of human rights, a watchdog on climate change and advocate of international debt relief for poor nations. Others, however, see the 70-year-old Honduran as a reactionary in the other direction: Described as sympathetic to a coup in his homeland and stirring accusations of anti-Semitism for remarks that some believe suggested Jewish interests encouraged extra media attention on church sex abuse scandals. Maradiaga, the archbishop of Tegucigalpa, is among a handful of Latin American prelates considered to have a credible shot at the papacy.

___

CARDINAL ANGELO BAGNASCO: The archbishop of Genoa, Bagnasco also is head of the powerful Italian bishops' conference. Both roles give him outsized influence in the conclave, where Italians represent the biggest national bloc, and could nudge ahead his papal chances if the conclave looks to return the papacy to Italian hands. At 70 years old, Bagnasco is seen as in the right age bracket for papal consideration. But his lack of international experience and exposure could be a major liability.

CARDINAL SEAN PATRICK O'MALLEY: As archbishop of Boston, O'Malley has faced the fallout from the church's abuse scandals for nearly a decade. The fact he is mentioned at all as a potential papal candidate is testament to his efforts to bring together an archdiocese at the forefront of the abuse disclosures. Like other American cardinals, the papal prospects for the 68-year-old O'Malley suffer because of the accepted belief that many papal electors oppose the risk of having U.S. global policies spill over, even indirectly, onto the Vatican's image. O'Malley is among the most Internet-savvy members of the conclave.

Egypt raises state of emergency in Sinai: MENA

MANCHESTER, England, March 7 (Reuters) - Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson broke his silence on Friday over this week's Champions League exit and dismissed media speculation that dropped striker Wayne Rooney's Old Trafford days were numbered. The England international only came on as a 73rd-minute substitute against Real Madrid in United's biggest game of the season on Tuesday when his side were 2-1 behind and reduced to 10 men after the controversial dismissal of winger Nani. "He will be here next year, you've got my word on that," Ferguson told a news conference. ...

Netflix changes its public API program by ending it, will no longer issue new dev keys

Once upon a time, Netflix was proud enough of its public API which enabled third-party services and apps to serve up its data and content in different ways that it opened a gallery to display them. Unfortunately, times have changed since 2009 -- the old App Gallery is gone and now, so is public API access for new developers. A blog post indicates the API is now focused on supporting Netflix's official clients on the many devices its customers use to stream movies, not hobbyist projects for managing ones queue or finding new movies to watch. While those already in place should still work since existing keys will remain active, the developer forums are being set to read-only, no new keys are being issued and new partners are no longer being accepted.

The move is reminiscent of recent changes by Twitter, where as each company has grown it's decided having control over the user experience through its own official apps outweighs allowing the community to build and extend access as it sees fit. We're sad to see the program go, as many of these tools assisted Netflix members in ways the official website and apps either never did, or no longer do after the features were removed. Even though Netflix relies on its own secret sauce for recommendations, we've always found it hard to beat InstantWatcher's curated lists (by year, Rotten Tomatoes rating, critic's picks, titles most recently added by other users and more) to find a video, and FeedFliks was indispensable for monitoring exactly how valuable the service is until its features were cut down by API changes. They provided an edge the competition like Amazon Prime and Redbox couldn't match, but we'll have to wait and see if this change is noticed by enough subscribers to matter -- we've seen how that can go.

Facebook and HTC team up for 'Myst' smart phone: report

The Facebook phone rumors roil onward. The latest has Facebook and HTC releasing a device called the Myst.?

By Matthew Shaer / March 8, 2013

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg takes the stage for a media event at Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif., March 7, 2013. A Facebook phone is reportedly on the way.

No, Facebook phone rumors are nothing new. In fact, they've been percolating for about three years now, in one form or another.?But there's a reason why they're so indelible: Facebook, and its shareholders, know that the future of the largest social network in the world lies in its mobile strategy. It makes sense that eventually, Facebook, no matter what CEO Mark Zuckerberg says, will try its hand at the hardware game.?

The latest Facebook phone rumor comes courtesy of the tech site Unwired View, which reports that HTC and Facebook are collaborating on a device known as the Myst (not to be confused with the popular computer game of the same name). The details are as follows: The Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean operating system, a 4.3-inch high-res display, a 1.5GHz dual-core processor,?1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, a 1.6-megapixel front-facing camera, and a 5-megapixel camera.?

It's worth noting that these aren't exactly high-end specs. There are plenty of phones out there already with bigger screens, faster processors, and much better cameras. So if the Unwired View report is correct, expect a mid-range smart phone.?

But the Myst, Unwired View notes, will "ship with a full complement of FB software pre-loaded, such as a new version of the Facebook app, Facebook Messenger, and Instagram, among others." So maybe all that integration will make the phone attractive to at least a few of the billion-odd Facebook users out there.?

Over at TechCrunch, Darrell Etherington notes that the Facebook app is already plenty popular, and easy to download onto a non-Facebook-branded phone. Ditto for Instagram. However, Etherington continues, "a relatively inexpensive device with the software already on-board is a way for Facebook to target directly the market where it needs to start seeing more growth."?

In related news, at a press conference yesterday, Mark Zuckerberg unveiled a fresh look for the News Feed. The new News Feed ? say that ten times fast ? will be heavy on multimedia and customization. The idea, Zuckerberg explained, is for Facebook to become a kind of??personalized newspaper."?
