VoIP and Your Business :SMEs Compete

Sunday, February 12th, 2012 at 11:18 pm ?

Many small to medium sized businesses are looking to VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) for their communications needs, mainly to reduce costs and to combine network features into an all-inclusive communications package.

In an equipment test, businesses were asked to test five systems: the NetVanta 7100, the Quick Edition, the Smart Business Communications System, the PBXtray and the Business Communications Manager 50, all from various vendors. Businesses were asked to determine what features were the most important when shopping for a cost-effective VoIP system for less than 100 users. Test parameters were focused on the voice component of unified communications systems.

Businesses chose the Quick Edition as the winner based on the following:

  • Simplicity of deployment, use, adding users and of management.
  • The ability to use an existing networking infrastructure
  • Speedy of deployment
  • Easy-to-use management interface

It?s understandable for a small business to prefer a VoIP system that is simpler, especially if the business has a small number of employees or doesn?t have the luxury of having a dedicated IT person.

While it was hard for businesses to choose between the Smart Business Communications System and the NetVanta 7100 products, they found NetVanta?s browser interface and management interface to be pluses. The Smart Business Communications System also scored well with its network monitoring capabilities, ability to work offline and greater add-on features and services.

In summary, if I were a business owner, I would still be reviewing the capabilities and functions of many systems, since every business is going to have different needs and preferences. While VoIP is not a one-size-fits-all telecom product, hopefully businesses will not ask themselves ?Should I use VoIP??, but instead ask, ?Which type of VoIP should I use??

Madonna Half Time Show VIDEO

Of course the day after the Super Blow and all anyone can talk about is the Madonna Half Time Show. Well let me tell you, it is worth all the chatter. So I have heard some negativity surrounding Madonna?s performance last night and I don?t get it. She rocked it. She sang classics such as ?Like A Prayer,? ?Vogue? and mixed in a few newbies. I?m sorry but most of the past Super Bowl performances have sucked. And I think it’s all these old fogies that are causing all the negativity. Hate to burst your bubble but, Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, Prince, Tom Petty, and Bruce Springsteen. Yawn fest. And let’s not get into how disastrous ?The Who? was. Madonna put on a SHOW. She nailed it. Sure she had moments of lip synching (who doesn?t) but she also had amazing dancers, acrobats from Cirque du Soleil, A-list collaborators and a killer set list. That is a show people. Artists like LMFAO, Nicki Minaj, M.I.A., and Cee Lo Green all helped make it an incredible show to watch. It also reminded us that yes, Madonna used to rock, but she still does. She is and always will be the [...]

InfoTrends InfoBlog ? Canon Continues Legal Strategy for Drum ...

Submitted By: Cathy Martin on February 2, 2012

On January 23, 2012, Canon Inc. of Japan, Canon U.S.A., Inc. of Lake Success, NY, and Canon Virginia, Inc., of Newport News, VA filed another complaint with the ITC to begin an investigation into two patents. At the same time, Canon filed civil action against the respondents in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York for the same patents. The two photoconductor patents are the same two patents that Canon had previously alleged patent infringement in 2010 for an ITC complaint (337-TA-731). This investigation was terminated in May 2011 due to the issue of a consent order prohibiting all 20 respondents including Ninestar from importing into the U.S. The patents are 5,903,803 and 6,128,454.

Table: Canon Patents in Court Proceedings 1/23/2012

Description
5,903,803 May 11, 1999 Process cartridge, electrophotographic image forming apparatus,
driving force transmission part, and electrophotographic photosensitive drum
6,128,454 October 3, 2000 Process cartridge image forming apparatus, driving force transmission
part, and electrophotographic photosensitive drum

Loosely defined, the patents are related to a projection on a drum that is designed to receive a rotational force from a hole in a laser beam printer so that the drum may be rotated. The projection on the cartridge enables it to be easily inserted and removed from the printer by the user and at the same time enables the drum to be rotated smoothly for a high quality printed image. The defendants in the case are listed below in Table 2 and the list following. Canon believes that the retailer/reseller companies receive some of the allegedly infringing product from the remanufacturers in Table 2.

Industry Impact:

This newly filed ITC complaint and concurrent court cases by Canon are significant for a variety of reasons although it raises more questions than answers at the moment. The proceedings include so many aftermarket companies including Clover and Nukote. It is one of the few times that Clover and its related companies have been included in a case like this. As the largest aftermarket company with a reputation on being very careful about IP issues, Clover as a defendant sends a message to the rest of the aftermarket industry. This?could have a trickle down affect which goes beyond just the aftermarket to affect some of Clover?s largest customers including office supply superstores. The resolution of these cases could have very far and wide-reaching impact on the aftermarket in terms of products and company activities.

The patents also affect so many products which are used in HP supplies that HP buys from Canon. In an effort to protect its patents from potential infringement, Canon is pushing very hard on this specific issue since this was not the first time that Canon has filed for these particular patents. Even though Canon did not receive a favorable outcome, the company had also pursued the same drum patent issue in Korea last year where many aftermarket companies obtain their drums. In addition, Canon has pursued this very issue with the ITC before with different defendants. This time, the company has included much more evidence and is requesting a GEO (General Exclusion Order) which could have greater impact on the industry compared to a consent order since it would affect all companies that import these products into the United States.

Table 3: Products Affected by Patents

Canon HP
104, 106, 306, 706, FX-6, FX-7, FX-8, FX-9, FX-10, L50, S3, X25 C4096A, C4127A/X, C4129X, C7115A/X, C8061A/X, C8543A/X, CB435A,
CB436A, CC364A/X, CE278A, CD285A, Q1338A/X, Q1339A, Q2610A, Q2612A/X,
Q2613A/X, Q2624A/X, Q5942A/X, Q5945A/X, Q5949A/X, Q6511A/X, Q7516A, Q7551A/X,
Q7553A/X, Q7570A

Regardless of the outcome, many expect that aftermarket companies will be able to find a workaround and find components that do not infringe by possibly switching suppliers.?It may also?force remanufacturers to scavenge for OEM parts to get the part they need if Canon is successful with these proceedings. In terms of suppliers, it has been noticed that Fuji and Mitsubishi, two of the largest drum producers, were not on the defendant list but many suspect that they are using the same gear. Some are wondering what would happen if the aftermarket moved to these suppliers for more of their drums. Reportedly, Static Control claims to have a drum that uses non-infringing patents but this could not be confirmed. If this is true, the aftermarket might consider this as valid solution. The downside is that prices for components could increase which would affect the aftermarket and they may be forced to pass their increased costs to the customers. In turn this would diminish the advantage for aftermarket products which gets back to the reason for Canon to pursue this strategy in the first place.

91% Beauty and the Beast (In 3D)

All Critics (82) | Top Critics (23) | Fresh (83) | Rotten (7) | DVD (36)

The greatest animated film ever made and one of the screen's great musicals hardly needs this (3D) sort of sprucing up.

What you gain in an extra, faked dimension you lose in lively, genuine beauty.

The 3-D pops out to enhance the drama or energy of scenes in which settings are large and integral to the action.

Some youthful memories are better not revisited, but this definitely isn't one of them. Sometimes you can go home again.

It is a surprise, in a time of sequels and retreads, that the new film is so fresh and altogether triumphant in its own right.

Despite some excessive narrative streamlining, this 1991 release was the best Disney animated feature in years, full of charm and humor.

Disney, please understand ... what people are actually showing up for ... they just want to see classic Disney on the big screen. The 3D is incidental.

Disney's gorgeous 1991 animated version of the classic fairy tale "Beauty and the Beast" gets the same 3D treatment that was recently given to "The Lion King."

Watching this in a theater definitely makes it feel less like a "cartoon" and more like a significant film. Cogsworth poking Le Fou in the butt with a sword aside.

One of the brightest jewels in Disney's crown, Beauty and the Beast's 3D reissue takes nothing away and makes the film's brilliance even easier to appreciate; the movie is more beautiful and timeless than it ever was.

Beauty and the Beast is just as enchanting 20 years after its initial release.

The apex of an art form, a justly celebrated classic, and the best animated movie of any sort ever put on screen at any time.

The lines have begun to show in Belle's tale, which remains enjoyable but feels more like a quaint artifact than the masterpiece it once was declared to be.

Both TANGLED EVER AFTER and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST are sure to enthrall audiences everywhere, even if the 3D doesn't really add much of anything to this animated classic.

A serviceable version of a classic fairy tale minus that crucial touch of magic.

And it is a joy to revisit the timeless pleasures of traditional Disney storytelling, with no attempts to add sizzle from celebrity voice talent or radio-friendly pop songs.

3D doesn't downplay the inherent artistry of the effort, but it doesn't enhance anything outside of ticket prices.

Beauty and the Beast looks beautiful and is sure to entertain, but this experience is superfluous at best-it was already a three-dimensional story long before these new technics.

Better remembered than seen, Beauty and the Beast has been treated unkindly not just by the years that have passed since it was released to enormous acclaim in 1991, but by a faddish 3D conversion.

The 3D is unnecessary - but it doesn't spoil the fun of Beauty and the Beast.

The ultimate makeover story has strong, positive messages.
